A young pilot in the military named Hikaru rescues his idol, the beautiful singer Lynn Minmay, from the giants as they break through the ship’s hull during a concert-during which the giants are shocked to see females on a male vessel-and they are trapped for days in an aft hold of the ship. After their rescue, Hikaru and Minmay continue on good terms until a joyride in a fighter trainer gets Hikaru, his squadron leader, Minmay’s brother, Minmay herself and the tough female operations controller captured by the giants, who grill them on how males and females can survive together without fighting. The giants’ female counterparts arrive to wreak havoc on their male foes, and in the ensuing confusion Minmay and her brother are detained while the others make an escape that costs squadron leader…”

In a way, this is a picture about generations. May Robson is QueenElizabeth; Leslie Banks is her lifelong adviser and admirer, the Earlof Leicester; and Morton Selten is Lord Burleigh, loyal and agedadviser. Together they are the elder generation: as Burleigh puts it,they have spent their lives as caretakers of the monarchy during mostlyquiet times. Now it’s 1587.Among the younger generation is Vivien Leigh as Burleigh’sgranddaughter Cynthia, a lady in waiting to the queen. Cynthia ispassionate, flighty, forgetful—and beautiful. She loves “the boy”Michael Ingolby, son of another of Elizabeth’s loyal followers. Michaelis portrayed with great energy by, of course, a very youthful LaurenceOlivier.The plot focuses on the court in London, where it is feared that spiesmay be afoot…and then on the Spanish court, where Olivier plays adangerous role as forces gather toward an invasion of England by theimposing new armada. Among those involved on the Spanish side are Robert Newton, very goodas a young nobleman; and an actress named Tamara Desni, excellent in akey role as a young woman who encounters Olivier.Raymond Massey is superb as King Philip of Spain. His best speech isone in which he simply repeats a single word several times: “And?”—Notmuch to it, but as played between Olivier and Massey it’s a classicscene. Flora Robson is perfect as the queen. She’s given such wonderfulspeeches, and she speaks them so well….
