The Murders in the Rue Morgue follows the story of Dr. Mirakle, atraveling carnival worker and mad scientist who is carrying out somepoorly specified experiments wherein he injects the blood of apes intoyoung women. The only problem is that they keep dying. A medicalstudent, Pierre Dupin, discovers what Mirakle is doing when he examinesthe bodies of the deceased but too late, finds that his girlfriendCamille is to be Mirakle’s next victim.There are some good scenes in this movie and some nice Gothic settings.I found the “bondage” scenes and dumping the bodies through a trap doorinto the river to be especially chilling in this film. And there weremoments of humor as well. But overall, I didn’t find this to be anexceptional film. It was okay, but really doesn’t shine when it comesto the old Universal horrors.Bela Lugosi did a fine performance, but far from his best and the restof the acting was just mediocre. The story was a bit too vague andundeveloped to really hold one’s attention, though the sets weredecent.Worth a watch for fans of older horror but don’t expect anything toospecial here.
