It’s very rare that a film manages to sear an image into one’s mindpowerful enough to stay for years. This simple little film fromNewfoundland/Labrador really managed to do that for me. I first sawthis film back in… I’m pretty sure it was in elementary school.Anyway, the storyline itself is very straightforward and plays withsome fairly familiar ‘human-centric’ thematics. This focus on emotioncan surely be appreciated on the narrative level. And, sure, the actingis commendable.But the best films surely have something more thanstoryline/acting/narrative elements going for them. The best films havea *uniquely cinematic* element as well. A purely visual element. To mysurprise, this unassuming film turned out to have that cinematicelement. Or I’ve certainly realized so over the years, as it has stuckin my mind. Or one image in particular certainly has. As you’re perhapsaware, there are a few things in life that are ‘inherently cinematic’,one could say. Fireworks? Human faces? Automobiles? … Water. Thisfilm might actually contain the best use of water as an inherentlycinematic element. It only comes near the end, if I’m recallingcorrectly, and involves the house in question. You’ll know it when you see it. It sticks in the mind. It’s memorableas hell. … So this is most certainly a sadly neglected film. Evenwhen Canadian cinema is discussed, this very rarely gets mentioned.Well, fine, then it can always be remembered as an overlooked gem.

She has narrow escapes from detection and detention, until she is finally exposed as a spy, arrested, convicted and imprisoned.

This is a good movie about a real life character. It has to be viewed inthecontext of thetime. It was shortly after the war and the wounds left by the Japanesetreatment ofprisoners of war were still deeply felt. Some of the acting is a littleoverthe top bytoday’s standards.But, watch it, and try to imagine going through what these people (theallied POW’s)went through.I enjoyed it. And I appreciate their sacrifice.

Ann Dvorak is real-life spy Claire Phillips in “I Was an American Spy,”a 1951 film also starring Gene Evans (known to baby boomers as thefather in My Friend Flicka on TV) and with a prologue and an appearanceat the end of the film by General Mark Clark.Though the movie takes the usual dramatic license, it does tell thetrue story of Claire Phillips, a woman living in Manila with herdaughter when the war broke out. After she becomes a widow, Phillipshelps the Americans by changing her identity and starting a gentlemen’sclub in Manila, which becomes popular with the Japanese soldiers. Fromher club, she provides information, food, boots, and medicine to thesoldiers and prisoners of war (although if prisoners of war werementioned in the film, I missed it). Her code name is “High Pockets”because she would put notes in her brassiere.If Claire Phillips did a third of what Ann Dvorak portrays in this film– and I think actually she did much more — one can see why she wasgiven the Medal of Freedom.

Buster (Phil Collins) is a petty thief with some skill. If he wants anew suit, he just breaks a store window and makes off with a mannequin.If the baby needs supplies, Buster sneaks into the chemist’s at nightand picks out what is needed. His wife June is getting a bit tired ofthis and would love to have a place of their own, not a rental.Therefore, Buster arranges a major train robbery (THE Great TrainRobbery in the early sixties). The plot is almost successful but Busterdoes not remain anonymous and is a hunted man, post robbery. Will heever see his family again? This is a very likable movie about anunlikely charmer. Buster does not want an honest job to support hisfamily but one just can not help liking the guy. Collins is quite goodas this amusing thief. Julie Walters, as his wife, is also sweet andattractive. The plot is amazing when one realizes these events actuallytook place. Part love story, part cat and mouse game, this film is afun view. Anyone who sits down to Buster will be laughing in shortorder, leaving the sometimes somber world behind.

I’m in Italy, the pope just died this weekend (April 2005) so ItalianTV showed ‘From A Far Country’ late last night. I’m not remotelyinterested in the pope, and I’m not Italian, so I couldn’t understandthe dubbing, but I nevertheless stayed riveted to this movie because ofthe stunning cinematography and subtle special effects that gave theimages such an extraordinarily documentarily accurate and overwhelmingsense of period time and place. From the apparent ages of the principalactors (Sam Neill, Chris Cazenove etc) I was able to guess that themovie was made in the early eighties, though the clever period look ofthe film and its imaging effects suggested 21st century digitalprocesses, so it was a real puzzle to me who had made it, perhaps someclassy 80’s director like Hugh Hudson, with a 2005 makeover from ILM,or perhaps the guy who shot Schindler’s List, or even Edgar Reitz. Butno, turns out it was all the work of some Polish director I’d neverheard of. Bravo Krzysztof Zanussi! Anyone interested in making period,historical movies of ostensibly dry subjects should definitely takenotes from this guy. Even the back-projected Vatican crowd sequenceabout halfway through, although looking obviously fake, is neverthelessso well done that one suspends not only disbelief, but also criticism.

For anyone wanting to find out about the real life Babe Ruth, this”true story” should be avoided at all costs! Created in 1920, this filmpurports to be about the Bambino and his rise to fame, but franklyalmost none of it bears any similarity to the slugger. In the film,he’s a small town boy who is shy and unassuming. In real life, he grewup in the “rustic small town” of Baltimore, Maryland and was a bit of ajuvenile delinquent–but I guess this image makes for a ratherunappealing film! Now the fact that they played so fast and loose withthe facts wasn’t totally awful–after all, many of our heroes of timespast have an aura of fiction about them. But the fiction they createdis so schmaltzy and saccharine that it becomes almost laughable. Babedoes practically everything in the film but walk on water and heal thesick! The fact that many at the time believed this is what is soamazing about this film. The only truth in the film is that the writersdescribe his as ugly–something I am surprised Ruth allowed. I guess hewasn’t too hung up about his looks.Speaking of looks, Babe is quite young in the film–and rather trimafter his first season with the Yankees. Oddly, though, he’d been avery famous pitcher with the Red Sox but this is never alluded to inthe film–but his prowess with the bat sure is. In fact, in the moviehe made the bat himself–something reminiscent of Robert Redford’scharacter in THE NATURAL.

Director MIchel Drach tells here his own story,when he was a childduring WW2.The film is a long flashback;Trintignant plays a director(actually Drach)who wants to transfer a screenplay -see above- to thescreen.If my memory serves me,cause it’s been a long time since Iwatched this flick for the last time,present scenes are shot in blackand white whereas past sequences are in color.Drach remembers.It was WW2,and Jews were arrested .His mother (playedby Drach’s then wife Marie-JosГ© Nat)had to escape from France and itwas not an easy thing to do ,because of her compatriots ‘ greed.There’sa wonderful part of a grand-mother ,marvelously played by GabrielleDoulcet who tries to explain to her grandson the absurdity of theanti-Semitism.Nat won the best actress prize at the festival de Cannes1974. Should appeal to people who like films like ” Au nom de tous lesmiens” (story of Martin Gray ,directed by Robert Enrico),”un sac debilles” and of course “the diary of Anne Frank”.

“Pearl” covers the life of a young aviatrix with a Chickasaw mother anda blind, white father during ages 12-18 in the 1920s and 30s. The sameactress plays Pearl throughout all these years, which doesn’t quitework. This film focuses on the love of young Pearl for her family,especially her father, and her love of flying, and the conflicts thatensue.This movie was sponsored by the Chickasaw Nation, and has that BBC filmquality rather than a Hollywood feel. Many BBC films, however, areexcellent, while this one was just . . . not. Apparently it was filmedin just a few weeks, and it really shows. The acting, while notterrible, was a bit forced rather than natural. The flying “specialeffects” are rather transparent as well.While it had many flaws, it wasn’t boring and did wring a few tearsfrom me anyway. It is an interesting story, and something the wholefamily can enjoy. I would recommend watching if you have an interest inaviation or Native American film.

A rare dud by Saura. A French psychologist (Fassbinder regular HannaSchygulla) is researching female suicide and travels to Mexico to studythe life of Antonieta Rivas Mercado (Isabella Adjani), a writer andpolitical activist who shot herself in Notre Dame. This wasn’t Saura’sproject, he basically did it as a director-for-hire, and there’s littleto no passion in it. Very uneventful and dull, a lot of politicalinformation but not much insight into Antonieta’s interior life. We geta sense of why she’s important to Mexican culture, but not why she’s acharacter worth spending time with. The few interesting moments(particularly when Schygulla “meets” Adjani) are overwhelmed by drybiographical data, with Adjani pretty much sleepwalking through therole. It didn’t help that the DVD was wretched, clearly transferredfrom a VHS source, and a poor one at that.
