The narrative of John P. Clum’s broadly varied activities is one of themost dramatic in U.S. history, his tenure as Indian Agent at Arizona’sSan Carlos Reservation, 1874/77, being particularly noteworthy andforming the subject of this film starring war hero Audie Murphy asClum. The audience verdict on this one is likely to be split. For the peoplelike me, who are completely in touch with Hollywood, who’ve seen filmslike ‘Into the Blue’, who’ve seen National Geographic and Discoveryundersea documentaries, we’re going to find nothing new here in termsof locales / settings and a very weak storyline. For all the others, itpromises to showcase the beauty of the big blue, as never seen beforeon Indian screens and a story that is about average when compared tomost other Indian films. The story involves the mystery of a treasure ship, ‘Lady in Blue’, amysterious character named Aarav (Akshay) who seems to be rich, but noone is sure of how much or even how, Saagar (Sanjay Dutt), who isbefriended and employed by Aarav, but has a mysterious reluctance toshare the whereabouts of the missing treasure ship. Then there is Sam(Zayed Khan), Saagar’s younger brother, who wants to be all mysteriousand cool but ends up coming across like a spoilt brat, the kind who aregood for nothing and assume the world owe’s them a living. All he doesin the film is get the bad guys to come after the good. Gulshan (RahulDev) is the official bad man, a role he plays well. Mona (Lara Dutta)is the official eye candy, while Katrina tries to be the eye candy butthe miniscule length of her role and her dreadlocks seem to impede herfrom doing so. What the film does well is the underwater shots – its beautiful, nice,aesthetic and sensuous.

Karla Faye Tucker is proof that God can move in mysterious ways, andthat He is a loving and forgiving God. When I first saw this on TBN Iwas tired, and about to head to bed, but something told me to watch itso I did. Through out the film I couldn’t look away from the TV, and bythe time the credits rolled I was in tears. Her story can soften eventhe hardest of hearts! The cast was spectacular, it wasn’t your “cornyChristian”(I’m a Christian and I admit there are some out there thatare corny) movie, very professional, and very well acted. You see herlife while in prison, how she has changed since giving her life toJesus. But unlike some movies they don’t hide away from the facts, theflashbacks back to 1983 were done quite well. Karen Jezek did anexcellent job in portraying Karla, from the looks, to body language,everything was fantastic. She really showed that it wasn’t just acharacter she was portraying, it was a real life woman who had a hardlife since childhood. The story shows to non-Christian’s that God isreal, and He loves everyone no matter what they’ve done in their lives.It also shows Christians that if God can forgive someone like Karla,how much more should we forgive and accept others who differ from us?Also if we step out of our “comfort zone” look at who we could reachwith the message of God’s love. Had it not been for people who lovedGod and wanted to help people like Karla on death row, she might nothave found God, and her story wouldn’t be as big as it is.

Jessica has a very happy family lifewith her husband, Anthony John Denison, (Dan Rayner) who have abusiness that works out of their home and everything is going in theright direction until this rapist strikes. What makes this filmterrifying is the fact that many other women are being raped and thisrapist constantly goes back to Jessica and attempts to rape and killher so she will not be able to identify him. This film begins to getrather boring with this rapist never being able to get caught by policeor anyone else.

To say that DEVOTION is an accurate representation of the lives ofEmily and Charlotte Bronte is as erroneous as saying that 1939’sWUTHERING HEIGHTS and 1944’s JANE EYRE are flawless filminterpretations of their respective novels. Viewers who seek to learnall they can about the sisters Bronte should look elsewhere. Those whowish to be enveloped in a well-written, well-acted tale of two of thegreats of English literature should tune in whenever possible.Ida Lupino and Olivia de Havilland turn in rich performances as Emilyand Charlotte Bronte. Although much of the history in this film isdistorted, these woman effectively convey the personalities of theactual Bronte women, as evidenced in scholarly research throughout theyears. Charlotte (played by de Havilland) was known for being veryoutspoken, and driven toward making connections in the literary worldand becoming a success. Her view was that life was just a series ofexperiences that provided her with material on which to base her prose.De Havilland conveys a dualistic Bronte, showing both her bold andoutspoken tendencies, as well as her actual naive nature. Charlotte ischallenged by the fact that, although not particularly well-versed inlove and life, she has composed one of the greatest novels the literaryworld has ever known (Jane Eyre). This movie is a fantastic movie. Everything about it in my opinion wastop notch from the acting to the directing. I know Mr. Garfield wasblacklisted in the 1950’s but the majority of his other films are onvideo if not DVD. That being the case,why isn’t this one? A friendrecorded it off of TCM for me but to have it on DVD would be great. Forspecial features they could have say a Marine historian talk about thebattle and if Mr. Schmid’s wife or son are still alive they could beinterviewed as well. Anyway this is a great movie and I highlyrecommend it.If it ever is put out hopefully it won’t be colorized.Colorizing it would in my opinion just ruin the whole effect of thefilm. The battle scene was quite realistic as far as a 1945,film wouldgo. Mr. Garfield did a superb job of portraying Mr. Schmid. Some actorsmight have been tempted to overact the part of Mr.Schmid’s disabilitybut I feel he got it just right. I sincerely hope they come out withthis movie on DVD someday as a tribute to the courage of Al Schmid andall the other marines who sacrificed so much for us in World War Two.

This was supposed to be the satire on the movers and shakers of thesixties. Sorry I thought it was rubbish when it was released, and in2010 it still is terrible. An ambitious model in the swinging sixtiessleeps her way to the top – yes, it’s Evita in the UK! It too selfconsciously tries to be a Britflick aping of Antonioni (La Notte andBlow UP) and Fellini (La Dolce Vita and 8 and a half) and it does notwork – witness the dreadfully arch ‘cinema verite’ sequence and thepartner-swapping orgy scenes. Really the continentals do that sort ofthing much much better – even the actors look embarrassed!Satire? Umthe best scenes are actually a satire on British society in thefifties, eg the scene in the casino is actually the writer having a goat the Princess Margaret/Billy Wallace Soho set showing old decrepitaristos clinging to privilege after the War. But nowhere does the moviereally have a go at the hypocrisy surrounding the MacMillan/Wilsonyears – it merely portrays a few louche unbelievable charactersindulging in sexual freedom away from the gaze of society as a whole.Let’s face it Julie Christie’s character is really an upper middleclass aspirant trying to get ahead to join the beastly aristos. Thedirection and writing is plodding – Raphael was much better in ‘NothingBut The Best.’ The acting is fine apart from Julie Christie (who wearsa lot of nice clothes) who just pouts a lot and keeps telling us she isbored in a very actressy sort of way.

I was impressed by two great scenes – the ‘ocean storm’scene and the final battlefield scene, whichwas done in the tints of the three colors of the French flag. Any aspiringdirector should study the techniques of Abel Gance, becausethebrilliance of this great director would be inspiring! Gance wasalsoinstrumental in perfect casting. Though Albert Dieudonne was older,asactors go, he was perfectly cast as Napoleon. If this was an American filmand not a French film, I’m sure it would be considered as one of thegreatest films ever made by AFI and other organizations. I was glad that Abel Gance was able to see the affection that audienceshad for this film in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s when the film went ona world tour with a world class orchestra. It would have been sad if Gancehad passed on without knowing that his film was considered a masterpiece. If their was ever a silent film that ‘pulls out all of the stops’, this filmis it.

What About movie – The beginning of XI century in Russia or Rus. Kievan Rus is composed of the principalities that are governed by the sons of Grand Prince Vladimir of Kiev. Princes with their men collect tribute then sending it to their father in Kiev. In the north-east of Russia is the most distant principality of Kiev – Rostov. Prince Vladimir sends his son Yaroslav to rule in Rostov, when he turns 11 years old. Jaroslav grows under the tutelage of the boyars, who run the principality, while he is small. Growing up, Jaroslav takes power into their own hands, expanding the principality, and attaches the new lands. But this is not an easy task. Bandit gangs keep ruling in the woods, along the roads and rivers . Their main occupation is the slave trade. Gangs sell people to the Bulgars and the Khazars, and they send the slaves for resale to the lower reaches of the Volga. More and more often the Jaroslav’s squad, goes for tribute and finds empty, ransacked settlements of the tribes Meria. Rostov region …

It will probably help if you did a little reading up on what the moviewas about before you watched it. For a person who likes to start amovie cold, the film confused me in the beginning. Then in due courseof time I understood the rhythm but was still confused with thealteration of colour and B&W shots of essentially the same scene.So the movie gets off to a bad start by assuming that audience membersare already in the know. It was interesting to see how various aspectsof Demy’s film making were influenced by his childhood experiences.However as in the case of most artists and intellectuals, this is to beexpected.Other than providing an insight, the interspersing of Demy’s movieclips in between also provided a sense of familiarity and comedy. Having been made by the wife of the main protagonist, the film feltfairly self-indulgent. It was like Shahjehan constructing the Taj Mahal- a beautiful construction for personal satisfaction for the others tosee and admire.The story is fairly simple, straight forward and predictable but itsexecution is charming. I for one came off this film highly inspired andmore determined to follow my dreams.4 stars for the optimism, feelgoodness and acting.
