What can i say about this movie? I have seen it quite a few times sincethefirst time when i was around 6. I have seen the english version and it isdone very well. It is a great movie for all ages, but it is directed morefor children. I love the childlike humor and appreciate it.

It has all the trappings of an entertaining musical, but the chemistryis not there. A few of the musical numbers are worth seeing, but manyare mediocre at best. The most peculiar thing about the movie is itssubstitution of boring, pedestrian new songs to take the place of ColePorter’s songs. Although Jimmy Van Heusen certainly composed some goodsongs in his day, the present “Ya Gotta Give the People Hoke,” “BounceRight Back,” and “A Second-Hand Turban” are embarrassing. The producerscouldn’t find 3 more Cole Porter songs to use instead? Adding to theembarrassment is the bowdlerization of the song “Anything Goes,” inwhich Mitzi Gayner is not even permitted to refer to authors'”four-letter words.” Instead, we are nonsensically told that authorsnowadays use only “three-letter words.” Of course, such censoring ofthe lyrics of this song negate the entire premise of the song, which isthat anything is permitted nowadays.Donald O’Connor has a very nice dance routine with children and a lotof bouncing balls in “Bounce Right Back,” which is the most originalnumber in the film. The comedy duos by O’Connor and Crosby fall flat,as does the vocal by Jeanmaire. Indeed, after hearing the mangledarrangement of her trying to sing “I Get a Kick Out of You,” I actuallystopped the movie and played a Frank Sinatra version in order to getthe bad taste out of my ears. Mitzi Gayner is lively and attractive anddoes a good job in belting out her songs.

Tyler does seem content after he meets with lovely Amber, but Tammy is concerned about her husband when he near-hysterically claims that local creatures, including beavers, ravens, bears, fox, etc. have joined forces to sabotage his project.

I hated it. It is beyond stupid. But then I realised that when I playwith my little children they love it when I do really stupid things andput on really stupid voices and pretend to fall over in a really stupidway. They especially like it when the joke about wee wee or pooh poohand they love animals. On top of this adults have always told childrenreally simplistic stories, normally involving animals, with a moreimportant message wrapped up in it. Aesop Fables spring to mind. Watchit with children, let yourself go and revert to your more simple,childish self and you’ll enjoy a valuable experience with them.

I am a very big fan of most film musicals, but this one always left mecold.The plot is not very engaging or involving, and Fred Astaire is notreally a very likable character here-whereas in most, if not all of hisother films, he is always very likable.The dance numbers are really nothing special-compare some of the oneshere with say, Fred Astaire and Eleanore Powell in Broadway Melody of1940!!No comparison. Now that film had some great dancing , superb,especially the finale, “Begin the Beguine”.I know everyone simply adores Vincente Minellis’s work, and he was verytalented to be sure, but this is one of the most overrated filmmusicals ever.

Now, you see, back when I was about 16 (a mere 5 years younger than MrCusack), my friend introduced me to ‘The Sure Thing’; saying how it wasa funny teen film and I was sure to like it. Well, that was anunderstatement, because I hired this soooo many times from the videostore-the owner (yes, I know, it’s illegal) even offered to record itonto a blank tape for me to keep!!John Cusack’s superb characterisation of ‘Gib’ is so caring, sohilarious and so off the cuff, it is perfect in every way, DaphneZuniga is the perfect prim & proper student, who eventually melts intonormality and hey, even though the part is small, ‘Anthony Edwards’ isalways great. lets face it. This film just shows off all the facets ofJohn Cusacks acting ability for all to see and it is a real pleasure tohave ‘found’ him so long ago & I am proud, yes, proud to see his careermaterialise into something so great; that he is getting some reallygreat parts, is producing etc too…well done John!! I am no great filmbuff as such, but am always glad when this actor appears in new films,he’s what todays film industry needs and is all about ! I thought that this movie was nothing special but tolerable until thestupid ending just ruined it completely. I was waiting for the moviemakers to merge the Suri/Raj characters into a more normal man but no!It would have made perfect sense because the geek and the weird fashionstud were both the same person and Taani loved them both!! But thatwasn’t meant to be; I watched with growing disgust as the honeymoonphotos flipped by because an ugly, very middle-aged looking geezer anda young, beautiful woman didn’t look like a convincing couple at all,more like a father and daughter!! I really hated SRK’s mustache when hewas Suri and the Raj character was way over the top and irritating.

Another Year – CATCH IT (A-) Another Year is a look inside the sixtyyears old married happy couple and their friends and family for nextfour seasons. This is not a movie but a couple’s life which rolls infront of you and you just sit back and watch how they spend their livesthrough different seasons. Another Year is unlike any other thing Ihave ever seen. There are many few movies around which stand alone onstrong characterization. The characterization of especially the marriedcouple Tom, Gerri and Gerri’s friend Mary is so powerful that in fewseconds you forget that it’s a movie as it seems like a camera onsomeone life. The performance by Jim Broadbent and Ruth Sheen aresimply awesome and seems so effortless. But it’s Lesley Manville asMary who steels the frame as the lonesome, drunken woman tryingdesperate to find some peace in her life. Her performances is one ofthe strongest performances I have ever seen, it just pierce throughyour heart. There is this melancholy pain in her eyes and voice thatjust indescribable. I really don’t know how Academy Awards ignore herperformance. She truly deserved an Oscar for her remarkableperformance. Oliver Maltman as Joe and Karina Fernandez as Katie areeffortlessly good. The other supporting cast also did a fine job.

MargaretSullavan is very articulate and so kind that she accepts to marry thisyoung recruit because to him “she is a dream come true that may keephim alive during the years of hell that he will endure…” Years,Americans were very patriotic and draft/conscription was a fact of lifefor most young males. As a Veteran of three wars (Kosovo, Afghanistanand Iraq), I paid dearly for my own dreams of saving my country fromthe “commies” – I was raised in the late fifties. On one day of May2003, on my 118th mission, my number came up; I woke up minuteslater… disabled for life.I witnessed war, I saw destruction, and I experienced fear not to sayterror. I shared room with many dismembered service members, some didnot make it, some died with me as their only companion.

MacLaine gets a huge workout in this episodic comedy about a woman fromhumble beginnings who is satisfied with the smaller things in life, butwho keeps marrying men who make a fortune and then die, leaving her awealthy widow four times over! Each one of the marriages sees MacLaineexperiencing a new level of frustration and enveloping herself in anincreasingly over-the-top super-glam wardrobe. As she relates themarriages to the rather manipulative psychologist Cummings, eachrelationship is seen as if it were a certain movie genre. Van Dykelives a simple existence as a small-time store owner and their sequencecontains an old silent-movie vignette. Newman is an expatriate artistliving in Paris, so theirs is a slightly naughty French art film.Mitchum is a businessman loaded with dough which lends itself to aparody of the fur-and-fashion Ross Hunter women’s pictures. Thenmarriage to small town hoofer Kelly includes a big song and dancenumber out of a 1940’s musical. Also on hand is loutish playboy Martin,who plays the man her mother (Dumont) wanted her to marry in the firstplace. MacLaine gives a worthy performance with lots of physical comedyand an impressive dance sequence. She’s occasionally a little shrill,but that’s the character. Van Dyke is solid, Newman is sexy (and showsmore skin here – albeit G-rated – than in the bulk of his othermovies), Mitchum is charming, Kelly is appropriately self-involved andMartin is his usual suave, laid-back self.
