Rodeo racketeers running a gambling/counterfeiting operation arefinding their profits dwindling due to the fact that Tex Ritter seemsto win every event. Soon Tex and his sidekicks are running from amurder charge, protecting a girl and her brother from the gang andtrying to put the wrap on the gang.Without much action, this is not really one of Ritter’s best outings,though he’s as likable as ever, rising above the material with hisbreezy good-natured attitude. Though his surroundings are prettyturgid, he sails effortlessly through the movie and sings some prettygood songs.The best scene involves Tex’s card game with the villains.

One of the wonderful aspects of cinema is that all the various originalityof a culture can be presented, in any combination, with their indigenousvisual and aural realities. The arid outback, the aussie dialect, and theDown Under idea of Wacky combine in this oh-so-funny film to bring you totears from laughing so hard. You’ll find yourself rewinding to see a greatslapstick scene again, or to hear exactly what someone said. A quick takewill clarify a confusing one several scenes earlier causing renewed laughteryet again. When the credits began rolling I began laughing again atremembered shots still teasing my memory. And laughter isn’t all this filmhas to offer – bits of poignance, ire, and mystery are added to the recipeto round out its flavor. The story could only have been told in Australiaby Australians to acheive so great result.

Inconsequential but compulsive, singer-musician Spade Cooley’s threestarring Westerns (this one, Border Outlaws and The Silver Bandit, all1950) were made at the end of his screen career, after he had spent hisprevious time in film appearing as the musical interest supportingvarious oaters. Inconsequential because none of the 3 rise above theirlow budget limitation, whilst Cooley himself is a incurably woodenperformer. Compulsive, because Cooley infamously murdered his realspouse ten years after these films were made, was thereafter sentencedto life for his crime, and watching the now forgotten images on screenacquires a morbid fascination entirely of their own. (One of hisbiggest hits was titled Shame on You.) And because of their sad star,the films’ half hearted attempts at satirising the more successfulsinging cowboys of the time, like Rogers and Autry, actually succeed intouching a nerve in a way their makers could never had imagined.The Kid from Gower Gulch demonstrates this perfectly. As was the rulein his films, Cooley plays himself, but with a slight fictional varianton his screen persona. As ‘Spade Cooley’, ironically welcomed as the’famous Western comedy music star’, here he plays a key part in helpinga rancher win a crucial rodeo competition. But ‘Cooley’ is a fake, foras he admits: ‘I never wanted to be a Western actor …Everything I do inpictures is done by others’ and he is ‘ashamed to keep fooling thepublic’.

Cowboy From Sundown casts Tex Ritter as a local sheriff with somedisagreeable duty to perform. He’s got to quarantine various herds ofcattle for hoof and mouth disease and the ranchers are already facingdrought. Which is just great for banker George Pembroke, his bottomfeeding son Carleton Young and their lawyer Tristram Coffin. These guysare looking to pick up ranches at a fire sale rate and they’ve evenused their influences to prevent the ranchers from getting governmentloans to help them over the rough patch. Not only that Young is making a move on Pauline Haddon who fanciesSheriff Ritter instead, but she’s a cattle rancher also. In fact exceptfor Deputy Roscoe Ates, Tex is pretty friendless through most of thisfilm.Monogram would have been better to put this in a modern west setting.Back in the day there were no agencies giving out government loans, butduring the New Deal there certainly were. It’s a major flaw in a filmthat was tailor made for the New Deal times.Still it’s an OK B western that I’m sure found an audience in 1940 witha plot that resonated the present.

My two brothers and I used to pretend that we were Crash, Dusty, andAlibi, running through the back yard with cap guns blazing. I onlyremember seeing three of the 24 films that they starred in, but of thethree, the most memorable was Tumbledown Ranch. This film evoked theearliest vestage of time travel, with the trio assuming a modern daypersonage of their “Range Buster” ancestors. After vanquishing the evildoers, they all awaken under a tree, back in their own time. Althoughtheir films would appear “corny” by today’s standards, for my brothersand I they provided just the role models we needed growing up in thefifties.

First off, there is NO beach party in the movie. The party, such as itis, actually takes place at the very end of the flick in front of agarage. Strike one.Next, the “monster” which they call a skunk ape, is a man in a really,really cheap gorilla outfit. It’s a skunk ape cause it smells bad.Strike two. I expected them to pull a Scooby-Doo and reveal at the endthat it was actually a killer in a gorilla costume, but no, they stickwith the monster story.Finally, the attempts at humor fall flat. It makes you long for FrankieAvalon and Annette Funicello’s comic delivery. Strike three.A bunch of songs are peppered throughout, just like the Beach Partymovies, except these tunes are all pretty forgettable, with theexception of Syphilis, which was mildly amusing, and Go Go Gorillawhich is a bit catchy. The songs are all sung badly. I’ll give the film 3 stars because I grant leeway for low budget indiesand the performers seem to be having a good time. Also, they try torecreate the 60s feel of the Beach Party movies with the cars andclothes, and do a decent job for little money. Just the same, I’drather watch Ghost in the Invisible Bikini than see this again.

The band gets booked at a popular bar, which leads to a last minute booking to open for a reunion tour, with the possibility of additional tour dates. But the band has internal conflicts. He faces a tough decision to give it a shot even though it will affect his marriage, his family, particularly his daughter, and his business.

Haha the movie isn’t as bad as my title implies, but I just couldn’tpass up the opportunity to make a lame wordplay.”Flying By” is a soft drama about a family struggling through a midlifecrisis. Although it centers around music, the real theme is about acouple’s dreams diverging as they enter the post-children phase ofmarriage. There aren’t a lot of flashy plot elements or passionatescenes; instead it’s a somber, quiet depiction of a family conflict,probably closer to reality than most other movies touching on thesubject.That also means, like real life, it’s somewhat uneventful. The mainreason to watch this film would be to see if you find hints of yourselfin the story (are you dissatisfied with your marriage, career, purposein life?). Other than that, if you’re just looking for rock & rollentertainment, it might not live up to your expectations.Acting is good, but I can’t help feeling that the characters weren’tfleshed out enough for them to have an impact. For example, HeatherLocklear’s character was well played but came across as atwo-dimensional villain, always judging & criticizing Billy Ray’scharacter. Billy Ray’s character was simple, quiet good guy; we neverreally got into his head (or maybe that’s the point, that there’s notmuch in his head and instead he’s just “flying by”).

In this entertaining matinГ©e entry from singin’ cowboy Eddie Dean,cattle rustlers are foiled by the undercover work of government agentDean . Rubbery-faced sidekick Soapy Ates helps the hero subdue therascally cattle-snatchers.The script and budget were limited here, but Dean had one of the bettersinging voices in western film and as always took the role seriously.Kindly-faced William Fawcett appears again as the bad-guy, with verybelievable results.This film was fairly standard and routine, but offers action and goodtunes to the B-western fan.
