It has all the trappings of an entertaining musical, but the chemistryis not there. A few of the musical numbers are worth seeing, but manyare mediocre at best. The most peculiar thing about the movie is itssubstitution of boring, pedestrian new songs to take the place of ColePorter’s songs. Although Jimmy Van Heusen certainly composed some goodsongs in his day, the present “Ya Gotta Give the People Hoke,” “BounceRight Back,” and “A Second-Hand Turban” are embarrassing. The producerscouldn’t find 3 more Cole Porter songs to use instead? Adding to theembarrassment is the bowdlerization of the song “Anything Goes,” inwhich Mitzi Gayner is not even permitted to refer to authors'”four-letter words.” Instead, we are nonsensically told that authorsnowadays use only “three-letter words.” Of course, such censoring ofthe lyrics of this song negate the entire premise of the song, which isthat anything is permitted nowadays.Donald O’Connor has a very nice dance routine with children and a lotof bouncing balls in “Bounce Right Back,” which is the most originalnumber in the film. The comedy duos by O’Connor and Crosby fall flat,as does the vocal by Jeanmaire. Indeed, after hearing the mangledarrangement of her trying to sing “I Get a Kick Out of You,” I actuallystopped the movie and played a Frank Sinatra version in order to getthe bad taste out of my ears. Mitzi Gayner is lively and attractive anddoes a good job in belting out her songs.

I am a very big fan of most film musicals, but this one always left mecold.The plot is not very engaging or involving, and Fred Astaire is notreally a very likable character here-whereas in most, if not all of hisother films, he is always very likable.The dance numbers are really nothing special-compare some of the oneshere with say, Fred Astaire and Eleanore Powell in Broadway Melody of1940!!No comparison. Now that film had some great dancing , superb,especially the finale, “Begin the Beguine”.I know everyone simply adores Vincente Minellis’s work, and he was verytalented to be sure, but this is one of the most overrated filmmusicals ever.

What About movie – Surinder is married to Taani but there is a huge age gap between them. There is no real romance in the marriage. Then, a dance reality show called Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi” airs and Taani wants to participate but can’t because her husband is not hip and happening. She has a fear of losing, and she also fears that her friends will laugh at her. Surinder overhears her problem and decides to go in for a makeover. He watches some movies and learns to dance in order to woo his young wife. Throughout the show, Taani keeps falling in love to with this new-and-improved Surinder without once realizing that he’s really her husband.”

I thought that this movie was nothing special but tolerable until thestupid ending just ruined it completely. I was waiting for the moviemakers to merge the Suri/Raj characters into a more normal man but no!It would have made perfect sense because the geek and the weird fashionstud were both the same person and Taani loved them both!! But thatwasn’t meant to be; I watched with growing disgust as the honeymoonphotos flipped by because an ugly, very middle-aged looking geezer anda young, beautiful woman didn’t look like a convincing couple at all,more like a father and daughter!! MacLaine gets a huge workout in this episodic comedy about a woman fromhumble beginnings who is satisfied with the smaller things in life, butwho keeps marrying men who make a fortune and then die, leaving her awealthy widow four times over! Each one of the marriages sees MacLaineexperiencing a new level of frustration and enveloping herself in anincreasingly over-the-top super-glam wardrobe. As she relates themarriages to the rather manipulative psychologist Cummings, eachrelationship is seen as if it were a certain movie genre. Van Dykelives a simple existence as a small-time store owner and their sequencecontains an old silent-movie vignette. Newman is an expatriate artistliving in Paris, so theirs is a slightly naughty French art film.Mitchum is a businessman loaded with dough which lends itself to aparody of the fur-and-fashion Ross Hunter women’s pictures. Thenmarriage to small town hoofer Kelly includes a big song and dancenumber out of a 1940’s musical. Also on hand is loutish playboy Martin,who plays the man her mother (Dumont) wanted her to marry in the firstplace. MacLaine gives a worthy performance with lots of physical comedyand an impressive dance sequence. She’s occasionally a little shrill,but that’s the character. Van Dyke is solid, Newman is sexy (and showsmore skin here – albeit G-rated – than in the bulk of his othermovies), Mitchum is charming, Kelly is appropriately self-involved andMartin is his usual suave, laid-back self.

Sometimes when rating movies I can feel a little embarrassed in givingcertain films a three out of four star rating. Well, to hell with that– I flat-out enjoyed G.I. BLUES, which was Elvis Presley’s fifth movieand marked a significant shift in his public image and how he would beperceived throughout the 1960s while The Beatles and other groups weretaking over. After coming back from his stint in the U.S. Army, Elvismade this picture which capitalized on that event. He plays a G.I. whotakes a bet with some of his army pals in Germany that he will be ableto score with leggy fraulein dancer Juliet Prowse. Along the way thereare laughs, songs (naturally), and some romance.Gone here is the young rockin’ rebel we’d previously seen in films likeLOVING YOU, JAILHOUSE ROCK, and KING CREOLE. Now we have Elvis as themore matured family man, Elvis as the comedian. And you know what?Elvis could be funny! Some of his comedic facial expressions in thisare priceless, and the scene where he nervously bumbles about whiletrying to babysit a screaming child is truly humorous. Regardless ofhow Elvis himself felt about doing such a film, it doesn’t show in hisperformance at this stage as it would many years later when it wouldappear he was just going through the motions in these types offormulaic situations; here he seems to be having a good time.The songs aren’t superb, but they’re fun and entertaining. I just purchased the DVD of Pal Joey and the picture and colors arebreathtaking. It is wonderful to see the scope of 1957 Frisco in digitalWidescreen. I will say that those expecting a full, true musical, might bedissappointed. It is a lighthearted movie that contains songs. AND WHATSONGS THEY ARE. The Rogers and Hart songs never sounded better and it isalways a treat to SEE Sinatra perform them, especially here in 1957 when hewas at the peak of his artistry. The look and feel of the movie is quitemodern, and although tame in comparison to modern films, the script is coyand sexy. It is lighthearted fun and entertainment and all do a fine job intheir roles. (Sinatra won a Golden Globe for best actor) . One could onlyhope that they hurry and remaster the rest of the Sinatra catalog on DVD. Next should be “Hole in the Head”. I welcome any and all comments…emailme!!

It took 17 years for the play PAL JOEY to reach the screen, and eventhoughthis ‘Joey’ is watered-down, the film is still thirst-quenchingto first time viewers. The differences between play and film havebeenexaggerated. San Francisco (film) and Chicago (play) are related.Whatdoes grate on people who “know the score”,in both senses, is the lossofhalf the stage songs to background music. They are wonderful and I can-notsee why Frank Sinatra wouldn’t have begged to sing them. I thinkthat Rita Hayworth, sadly aging (at 39 she looked 49), is extremelyunderrated as ‘Vera’.

If Technicolor MGM finesse is enough to stun you (and it easily can beenough) then THE HARVEY GIRLS is 3D color heaven. As a musical and as amovie, I found it weirdly flat. In Australia where these films werehuge box office successes, MGM reissued many of their 40s and 50smusicals right up to the late 60s. The few that were not on the reissuelist included THE HARVEY GIRLS. … whether it was too American (!?) orwhether it just did not have the pizazz or the fantasy we in Oz seem tolove, I am not sure but I can feel my reasons why I became bored withit. On the plus side, I was constantly enchanted with gorgeous Garlandaged 22, the breathtaking Technicolor photography and any close up ofAngela Lansbury, clothed to the dazzling hilt. I can see how and whythis film went through various changes during production and it feelslike an overdressed version of another more ordinary western gussiedinto being a 1945 musical. OKLAHOMA’s 1943 stage success is quiteevident. Research shows that MGM saw a chance to emulateOKLAHOMA’ssuccessful stage result and contrived a western on theproduction conveyor belt into a pseudo OKLAHOMA – ish movie bywrangling THE HARVEY GIRLS into the form it is now. This explains whythe film seems disjointed and pieced from different imagery and ideas.I found John Hodiak creepy with his odd teeth/mustache (that scarygrin!) and no leading romantic man for Judy.

Wonderful music and terrific shots of New York at its best.”

ON THE TOWN is the splashy 1949 film adaptation of the LeonardBernstein Broadway musical, which has now been tailored to fit the MGMstable of stars. Co-directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, this filmmade history as the first musical to actually do some filming onlocation in Manhattan. The story is simple: three sailors (Kelly, FrankSinatra, and Jules Munshin) have a 24-hour leave in New York and arelooking for romance. Betty Garrett plays a female cabbie who has thehots for Sinatra and Munshin falls for an anthropology student playedby Ann Miller. Kelly sees a poster in the subway for this month’s “MissTurnstiles” (Vera-Ellen) and decides to spend the whole day looking forher. This thin plot allows room for some memorable musical numbersincluding the classic, “New York, New York”, Miller’s memorable “FindMe a Primitive Man” and a fun duet with Sinatra and Garrett called”Come up to My Place”. Actually “My Place” and “New York” are the onlysongs from the original Broadway show, but why carp? It’s a musicalclassic that is a delight from start to finish.

I understand, from people who have bought thisDVD, or a similar version, in the same packaging, that it is arecording of a stage version, which features Kevin Kline, PatriciaRoutledge, et al, but isn’t necessarily the official one. Also, it hasDutch subtitles. The quality isn’t good; it’s grainy, the colour isinsipid and the sound is very low. It’s quite probable that it has beenrecorded from an original NTSC video. I think that IMDb should checkthis item out, as there’s clearly some sort of mix-up, here.

I guess this isn’t an awful film, but after recently viewing it, I wasstruck by how it really needed that Griffith touch. Especially sincethe script was something Griffith would have done. But they missed outon any chance for true suspense by neglecting everything they shouldhave learned from Griffith about climactic cross-cutting.Wow…I feel like I’m turning into a film geek or something. (I guess Ilike Griffith more than I thought…or I’ve just seen too many of hisfilms.)Anyway, if you want to see a movie worth watching with the Sisters Gish(and who doesn’t??), watch (or re-watch) Orphans of the Storm. Viewthis only as a comparison as to why Griffith was truly a master.
