Okay there ‘s only half-a-dozen in this movie and they are not dirty butthere’s a strong analogy between “ten seconds to hell” and the 1967 work: agroup of men,going for broke ,bound to die one after theother.Jack Palance is impressive in a non-villain part,and his character displaystension,emotion and compassion.Jeff Chandler is also very effective .Thedefusing scenes have a near-documentary side which makes them veryconvincing .The main flaw is Martine Carol’s part :her character did not seem to appealto Aldrich and her scenes come at the most awkward moment.This is theumpteenth story of the French girl who loved (and married) a German and nowis looked upon as a traitor to her country.This is a man’s story whichleaves no place for women as “whatever happened to Baby Jane” is an Aldrichwoman’s film which men have nothing to do with.

I am a very big fan of most film musicals, but this one always left mecold.The plot is not very engaging or involving, and Fred Astaire is notreally a very likable character here-whereas in most, if not all of hisother films, he is always very likable.The dance numbers are really nothing special-compare some of the oneshere with say, Fred Astaire and Eleanore Powell in Broadway Melody of1940!!No comparison. Now that film had some great dancing , superb,especially the finale, “Begin the Beguine”.I know everyone simply adores Vincente Minellis’s work, and he was verytalented to be sure, but this is one of the most overrated filmmusicals ever.

Now, you see, back when I was about 16 (a mere 5 years younger than MrCusack), my friend introduced me to ‘The Sure Thing’; saying how it wasa funny teen film and I was sure to like it. Well, that was anunderstatement, because I hired this soooo many times from the videostore-the owner (yes, I know, it’s illegal) even offered to record itonto a blank tape for me to keep!!John Cusack’s superb characterisation of ‘Gib’ is so caring, sohilarious and so off the cuff, it is perfect in every way, DaphneZuniga is the perfect prim & proper student, who eventually melts intonormality and hey, even though the part is small, ‘Anthony Edwards’ isalways great. lets face it. This film just shows off all the facets ofJohn Cusacks acting ability for all to see and it is a real pleasure tohave ‘found’ him so long ago & I am proud, yes, proud to see his careermaterialise into something so great; that he is getting some reallygreat parts, is producing etc too…well done John!! Of the more than one thousand productions I have seen during mylifetime, this is definitely among the top three.It is strong in almost every respect, from its cinematography to itsbackground music.To me, its highest appeal is its unqualified universality of emotion.How many of us have not had a parent step in at some supremelyinopportune moment and ruin something valuable in our lives? How manyof us have not been hated by someone who sees the world differently?How many of us have not instantly fallen in love? It is almostirrelevant that the production is set in the gay section of Vancouveror that the main characters focus on same sex love. It is emotionscommon to everyone that give the production its extreme appeal. I wascheering the girls, and would have been very hurt if they had notgotten back together again.I might add that this is the only DVD I have seen in which I enjoyedthe director’s comments as much as the production itself.Both of the young actresses displayed an amazing variety of facialexpressions. The shot focusing on Cox’s deep blue eyes while Karyn isunable to confront her mother with the truth is priceless, as is Cox’sgesture half hiding her face and half saying “so what” as she flees theapplauding crowd after the bathroom scene.The film’s only weakness, in my opinion, is that everybody foundsomeone in the end, at least at the very same instant. Life is simplynot that generous.

MacLaine gets a huge workout in this episodic comedy about a woman fromhumble beginnings who is satisfied with the smaller things in life, butwho keeps marrying men who make a fortune and then die, leaving her awealthy widow four times over! Each one of the marriages sees MacLaineexperiencing a new level of frustration and enveloping herself in anincreasingly over-the-top super-glam wardrobe. As she relates themarriages to the rather manipulative psychologist Cummings, eachrelationship is seen as if it were a certain movie genre. Van Dykelives a simple existence as a small-time store owner and their sequencecontains an old silent-movie vignette. Newman is an expatriate artistliving in Paris, so theirs is a slightly naughty French art film.Mitchum is a businessman loaded with dough which lends itself to aparody of the fur-and-fashion Ross Hunter women’s pictures. Thenmarriage to small town hoofer Kelly includes a big song and dancenumber out of a 1940’s musical. Also on hand is loutish playboy Martin,who plays the man her mother (Dumont) wanted her to marry in the firstplace. MacLaine gives a worthy performance with lots of physical comedyand an impressive dance sequence. She’s occasionally a little shrill,but that’s the character. Van Dyke is solid, Newman is sexy (and showsmore skin here – albeit G-rated – than in the bulk of his othermovies), Mitchum is charming, Kelly is appropriately self-involved andMartin is his usual suave, laid-back self.

Even though I was born a couple of decades after this movie wasreleased, I wanted to watch it when it played on TV because it wasgiven a perfect 5/5 rating by my local newspaper’s TV listings. When Ituned in, I was even more excited when I found out that it was a DavidWolper and Mel Stuart collaboration because I really loved ‘Willy Wonkaand the Chocolate Factory.’ It’s a shame that ‘If It’s Tuesday ThisMust Be Belgium’ is not available on DVD. Even though it was made about30 years ago, the misadventures of the ensemble cast are as funny asever. The fine balance between the witty humor and acerbic banter inthis movie is something that is rare in movies today. The only moviesthat come close are a few of Wes Anderson’s (Rushmore, RoyalTenenbaums, The Life Aquatic), but instead of being faux retro, ‘IfIt’s Tuesday This Must Be Belgium’ really is retro. It shows all ofEurope’s fabled landmarks in the tongue-and-cheek manner that you can’tget from any movie unless it really was made in 1969. I liked the partwhen the group was at a cheese market in Amsterdam and the tour guidesays, “There’s an auction of gouda cheeses and edam cheeses. And prettygood-a edam cheeses they are.” That is like so corny it’s funny. Afterwatching this movie, I actually did want to take a European bus tour!But the best thing about this movie is its great cast, particularly thebeautiful Suzanne Pleshette and the devilishly handsome Ian McShane.

I just purchased the DVD of Pal Joey and the picture and colors arebreathtaking. It is wonderful to see the scope of 1957 Frisco in digitalWidescreen. I will say that those expecting a full, true musical, might bedissappointed. It is a lighthearted movie that contains songs. AND WHATSONGS THEY ARE. The Rogers and Hart songs never sounded better and it isalways a treat to SEE Sinatra perform them, especially here in 1957 when hewas at the peak of his artistry. The look and feel of the movie is quitemodern, and although tame in comparison to modern films, the script is coyand sexy. It is lighthearted fun and entertainment and all do a fine job intheir roles. (Sinatra won a Golden Globe for best actor) . One could onlyhope that they hurry and remaster the rest of the Sinatra catalog on DVD. Next should be “Hole in the Head”. I welcome any and all comments…emailme!!

It took 17 years for the play PAL JOEY to reach the screen, and eventhoughthis ‘Joey’ is watered-down, the film is still thirst-quenchingto first time viewers. The differences between play and film havebeenexaggerated. San Francisco (film) and Chicago (play) are related.Whatdoes grate on people who “know the score”,in both senses, is the lossofhalf the stage songs to background music. They are wonderful and I can-notsee why Frank Sinatra wouldn’t have begged to sing them. I thinkthat Rita Hayworth, sadly aging (at 39 she looked 49), is extremelyunderrated as ‘Vera’.

ON THE TOWN is the splashy 1949 film adaptation of the LeonardBernstein Broadway musical, which has now been tailored to fit the MGMstable of stars. Co-directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, this filmmade history as the first musical to actually do some filming onlocation in Manhattan. The story is simple: three sailors (Kelly, FrankSinatra, and Jules Munshin) have a 24-hour leave in New York and arelooking for romance. Betty Garrett plays a female cabbie who has thehots for Sinatra and Munshin falls for an anthropology student playedby Ann Miller. Kelly sees a poster in the subway for this month’s “MissTurnstiles” (Vera-Ellen) and decides to spend the whole day looking forher. This thin plot allows room for some memorable musical numbersincluding the classic, “New York, New York”, Miller’s memorable “FindMe a Primitive Man” and a fun duet with Sinatra and Garrett called”Come up to My Place”. Actually “My Place” and “New York” are the onlysongs from the original Broadway show, but why carp? It’s a musicalclassic that is a delight from start to finish.

What About movie – This is a story based on fact that follows a husband and wife who emigrate from Scotland to Wisconsin in the 1850’s. They work very hard and become welcome citizens of their new town, Eureka. They have six children. They prosper in the husband’s boat building business. But when their eldest is 12, tragedy strikes the family, and the 12-year old is burdened with a terrible task which he handles as well as any adult could.

Johnny Mera Naam is perhaps Vijay Anand’s best directed movie. Releasedin 1970, this movie went on to cause a stir as did the music as it wasconsidered to be beyond its time.Two brothers,Sohan and Mohan, both studying in the same school, haveentered the school boxing competition. When the final comes it the twobrothers find out that they are fighting each other. Sohan is declaredwinner but the match is continued at home and the mother tells themthat they should wait for their father. Mohan, the elder, beingimpatient, goes to see his father – a police officer. Instead hewitnesses a smuggler by the name of Heera murdering his father. He thentries to catch him by chasing him and lends up hiding in his car.Years pass by and Sohan becomes an Police inspector and wanting tocatch smugglers, he lands himself in a cell with the man who hadmurdered his father, Heera and introduces himself as “Johnny.” He laterescapes and meets up with a contact that he had been informed about byHeera – a female by the name of Rekha.The movie stars the ever green Dev Anand, Hema Malini, Pran, Premnath,Ifteqar and I.S. Johar. The story is good but more than that is thedirection by the late Vijay Anand. But the acting by all and especiallythe comic side by the late I.S. Johar, is absolutely brilliant. Thesongs to listen out for are “O Mere Raja,” “Baabul Pyaare,” “NafratKarne Waaloh” and “Parbhal Keliye” – they are most memorable as is themusic by Kalyanji – Anandji.
