Frank Vincent is excellent as the senior citizen hit man who volunteersfor one last big job. The acting by all concerned is above average, andthe photography quite creative. There is of course plenty of violence,but it is not gratuitous. My only objection to “Chicago Overcoat” wouldbe that Armand Assante and Mike Starr really have small roles for beingfeatured on the DVD cover. It is Frank Vincent who shines throughoutand almost singlehandedly carries the film. The story flows nicely andhas a couple of minor twists and turns. Character development isespecially strong, and along with the compelling script, delivers avery enjoyable movie experience.

George Abbott was a brilliant Broadway play writer/director/producer.He won five Tony awards and a Pulitzer Prize. His Hollywood career wasinteresting, although a bit less successful. “Too Many Girls” is one ofonly three of his Broadway musicals that he brought to film. “PajamaGame” and “Damn Yankees” are the other two. While not quite as good asthose two, this one is a lot of fun and does have a lot of energy.Abbott also directed nine early sound films from 1929-1931. It isunfortunate that none of these are out on DVD, as far as I know.People have already noted the excellent cast: Eddie Bracken, LucilleBall, Desi Arnaz, Francis Langford, Richard Carlson, Hal Leroy and AnnMiller. They all sparkle here. They hold a silly and absurd plottogether by not taking any of it seriously for a moment. This is a goodthing because the plot is unrealistic in wink, wink, nudge, nudgefashion. The absurdity of having Desi Arnaz who looks like he weighs150 lbs. as a superstar football player is only topped by the absurdityof having Eddie Bracken, who looks 140 lbs., as a star quarterback.Culturally, it is fascinating to see the way colleges were portrayed in1940. Apparently, the only reason a woman went to college was, asLucille Ball bluntly puts it, was to get a man. I also wondered aboutthe women wearing beanies. The movie is unclear, but apparently all thegirls who wear beanies, nearly all the women students, are virgins.

What About movie – Pomeranian (NE German) boxer Max Schmelling, a fair, courageous gentleman, becomes world champion and a national hero in the early 1930s, winning the hand of singer Anny Ondra. Just for loosing against younger, fitter colored American Joe Louis, the Nazi regime lifts Max’s privileges and sends him to the front, hoping he’ll be killed in action. Yet he survives the conquest of Crete and by freeing a British prisoner unwittingly saves his own skin when after the Soviet conquest of his home region, Max is nearly taken PoW. He starts all over, although rather too old, with remarkable results.

I would like you people please to disregard the IMDb score and see thismovie for yourself. It appears that view have watched this, and indeedif you remove the idiotic “bollbashers” (those who rate 1 on every filmby Uwe), you would get an average of 6.4, a more suitable score forthis film.As a whole, this is not a great movie. But I had a unique pang ofexcitement when Joe Louis was on screen. Max Schmeling is played byHenry Mask, and the boxing matches were very similar to the real thing.The authenticity stems from both the director, who boxed at an amateurlevel for 15 years, and the “star” was a gold medallist, who hadpreviously held the IBF world light-heavyweight title. Thisoccasionally transcends into flat acting that on a whole was plainlymediocre. Still, Schmeling himself wanted him to play the role.This film deals with 14 years of his life, and shows how the Nazis usedhim as propaganda, and how he went against their values- even savingJewish boys from Kristallnacht. He has a blooming romance that comesacross as a bit clichГ©, but in all this movie was interesting, and verytruthful to Schmelings actual life. Some bits are omitted or mentionedin brief, but actual footage was organically placed into the film tomake it seem more like the Nazi period of time. You can’t help but feelyour looking at true history – that of a German hero.Concludingly, an average boxing film about an above average man. 6/10.

Basically a drama about Midget Racers (small, sleek single-driverrace-cars with normal-sized V-8 engines that helped to kill manydrivers in their era) and the hotshot son of a great driver who diedbehind the wheel. The only way I saw this is because I got a 35mm printof it in a film collection I bought. I don’t know if it’s public domainor not, but it’s fairly entertaining. The lead actors are all no-names,but they look good and can act just enough to make it work. The MidgetRacer footage is the highpoint, but sometimes the use of stock footagegets pretty bad (the grains and contrasts don’t match up at all). Itwould be a 4 or 5 B-Movie without the higher production values, but thesets look A-Grade and lift it a couple points higher. Not a must see,but not a waste of time, good 40s fun.

I enjoyed this movie very much. I like sports very much and this was agood sports movie. I think the main actors were pretty good and I alsoliked some of the others. It was based on a true story and I think manypeople experience things like that in anything people do. I think themain character was very driven and he wanted to make it but the some ofthe coaches seemed to have a problem with him for no reason at all. Iplayed pro handball back in my country and the way things go there areif you are a player that will help a team win, that player will playand there will not be any unfairness at all. I would think that coacheswould want to win and play the best players. Out of 10 stars, I givethis movie an 8.

Although that was enough to get him into the Montreal Canadiens, his frequent injuries cost him the confidence of his team and the fans. In the face of these doubts, Richard eventually shows the kind of aggressive and skillful play that would make him one of the greatest players of all time as The Rocket.” However for all his success, Richard and his fellow French Canadians face constant discrimination in a league dominated by the English speaking. Saw this last night at the LFF, and while it does betray its stageyorigins from time to time, there is much to enjoy in this biopic of JoeMeek, legendary music producer and nutcase. The film doesn’t shy awayfrom the murkier aspects of this mercurial character’s life – thedrugs, the rent boys, the cottaging, the verbal and physical abusemeted out to all and sundry – but Meek does emerge as something of asympathetic character. I guess that’s why so many people put up withhim – there must have been something charming about him.Good performances – including a pointless cameo from Kevin Spacey asMeek’s financial backer, the appropriately named Major Banks. Standoutsinclude the young actors playing Heinz and Patrick, the latter being ageneral factotum-cum-boyfriend who is one of the few people loyal tothe last.Nick Moran should be commended for bringing this quirky, sometimeshocking story to the screen – whether it will find an audience beyond60s music fans or those with a morbid curiosity for stories of popscandals will remain to be seen.Incidentally, I live in Islington and walked home past 304 HollowayRoad, where almost the whole film takes place. It did send shivers downmy spine.
