MGM has a lot to answer for. A great deal of time, money, and marveloustalent went into “Mark of the Vampire,” only to find 15 minutes (that’s20 percent) of it left on the cutting room floor. Releasing a scant60-minute movie, the studio reportedly cut the comic relief and alsovery obviously cut material crucial to continuity and consistency. The plot is left so full of holes that I doubt I could have followedthe action if it hadn’t been for the number of familiar actors, alldoing fine work here: the Lionels Barrymore and Atwill, Gene Hersholt,Donald Meek, and especially Bela Lugosi, who is given only onedelicious line, absolutely worth the wait. Even more impressive than the cast is Todd Browning’s direction (what’sleft of it), Cedric Gibbons’ classic sets (ditto), and the gorgeouschiaroscuro photography and fluid camera-work of James Wong Howe (andditto).Whether or not you approve of it, the surprise ending is a botch job.The movie plays like a straight vampire movie— disastrously edited, butcaptivating all the same. Then comes the last 10 minutes. You feelcheated, and not just because the movie abruptly transmogrifies into avampire-free murder mystery: The action was all elaborately staged toentrap a murderer by a detective, a professor, a girl, a butler, actorsplaying vampires, and a menagerie of real bats, rodents, and what Ithink was a huge scorpion. The real problem is those inconsistencies.

What About movie – Syd March is an employee at a clinic that sells injections of live viruses harvested from sick celebrities to obsessed fans. Biological communion – for a price. Syd also supplies illegal samples of these viruses to piracy groups, smuggling them from the clinic in his own body. When he becomes infected with the disease that kills super sensation Hannah Geist, Syd becomes a target for collectors and rabid fans. He must unravel the mystery surrounding her death before he suffers the same fate.

This film gets a huge A+ just for the performance of Caleb A. Jones. Some of the A-list reviewers claimed they were bored at parts. I don’tget that. I was riveted. What I like about the younger Cronenberg is that he is far more mentalthan visual. David Cronenberg always relied more on visual but alsomental ideas to make his points. The younger Cronenberg takes us on atrip of the mind through illness. But not just physical illness,societal illness. David Cronenberg of course did much of the same, butthis is different. It’s a different point of view. This film examines the absolute bottomof fascination with celebrity. Brandon Cronenberg is following in hisfather’s footsteps, and thank god he is. Is it a perfect film? No. Not even close. BUT, it is important for somany reasons. The ideas conveyed are incredible, and again- watchingCaleb Jones is pure acting geek joy. That is talent.If Brandon Cronenberg stays on course, he will be one of the mostimportant new filmmakers.

The Collection (2012)** (out of 4) Arkin (Josh Stewart), the survivor from THE COLLECTOR, is forced intothe warehouse of the killer by a group of professional hunters so thatthey can rescue a girl (Emma Fitzpatrick) who has been kidnapped. Thegroup soon find themselves in a deadly game that has them entertainingone rigged room after another. THE COLLECTION is a sequel to the 2009film that I’m not sure anyone was really asking for. I thought THECOLLECTOR was an entertaining, if flawed, movie that managed to have afew good things going for it. THE COLLECTION is certainly very flawedand has a bit of “been there, done that” but at the same time it’sstill a little better than most of the horror films from this year. Asusual, director Marcus Dunstan offers viewers plenty of violence andgore. If you’re wanting a gore feast then this here will certainly keepyou happy as bodies are ripped to shreds in a variety of ways includinga rather clever way to start the picture. I’m not going to give awaywhat happens in the club but it was pretty wild and certainlymemorable. I also think that the two lead characters are pretty goodand they at least make you like them and want to see them work theirway through this deadly maze. Both Stewart and Fitzpatrick offer upfine performances and help keep the film moving. The biggest problemwith the film is that there’s zero tension.

A female forensic psychiatrist discovers that all of one of her patient’s multiple personalities are murder victims. She will have to find out what’s happening before her time is finished.

What About movie – After the death of her husband, Dr. Cara Harding’s faith in God has been shaken, but not her belief in science. In an attempt to get her more open to accepting unexplainable psychiatric theories, her father introduces her to Adam, a patient with multiple personalities who also takes on some of the physical characteristics of his other personalities. But Cara quickly discovers that his other personalities were murder victims and the more she finds out about Adam and his past, the closer she and her loved ones are to becoming murder victims themselves.

The first half of this film is actually a very goodpsychological\supernatural drama which is thoroughly enjoyable.Julianne Moore and Jonathan Rhys Meyers are both excellent. Sadlyhowever in the second half it descends into the kind of god botheringmumbo jumbo so common in American cinema. Why it was released outsidethe U.S first is a mystery when its message, that having no faith ingod (even if you’re a six year old girl) can make you prey to some kindof hillbilly voodoo cult, is unlikely to appeal much outside the U.Smarket. Had they kept the sky fairy nonsense to a minimum and notsmacked us around the head with the idea that atheism is bad it couldhave been decently entertaining, but sadly they didn’t and it ended upbeing an unpleasant, cringeworthy mess.

Awaiting something in the neighborhood of Breaking Dawn, I must admit Iwas disappointed. Not from Kellys acting, although she at times hadsome trouble too. But then, you can’t lead the movie all by yourself.The rest was, I have to say, pathetic. The villain should focus on someexpressive acting. I mean, where’s a Malkovich when you need one,right? And I’m still trying to understand why somebody gave this moviea prize for editing, no offense. For instance, look at the scenesbetween Kelly and the bad girl (don’t remember her name, doesn’tmatter) at the nice guys place. Mirror in the back, distracting, hitwithout blood (and the punch was dubbed close to a Rocky’s cross, afterall, it’s a movie, we are talking hyper-reality here, people). Then theguy from behind chloroforming her (and that passing out was really bad,too, sorry Kelly). Can you see him in one scene, then not, then again?I mean, did any of the staff actually watch the movie after it wasfinished? And don’t talk to me about budget, either. I think theBlairwitch Project went on an even lower budget, and it was freaky,followed by a sequel, and rocked the Hollyworld to a completely newmovie experience level.

Whilst I may not be a pro at reviewing films by any stretch of theimagination, I feel compelled to give American Mary by the Soskasisters the highest praising review I can muster.My expectations for the film were high, having been caught up in thehype around the critically acclaimed body-mod horror – thankfully I waspleasantly surprised. There was a lot of room for error in making thefilm, but Jen and Sylvia approached the gory side of the filmperfectly, letting the viewer see just enough to be grossed out but notenough to warrant a sick bag. Whilst I was expecting fake blood andguts galore, the story and themes within the film were strong enoughnot to need the usual cheap thrills one might expect in a horror film,in fact I think the film wouldn’t have been as good were there moregore. On top of this, the characters were interesting/well developedand thanks to a couple of good casting calls and better performances(namely Katharine Isabelle and Tristan Risk) I found it easy to connectto them in the 103 minutes I watched them on screen.As many others have commented, it’s rare to find female horrordirectors that manage to hit the nail on the head quite as well as theTwisted Twins have manged to here, fingers crossed for a next projectequally as exciting.

What About movie – While attending a conference in Quebec City, Sherlock Holmes and his good friend Dr. Watson are drawn into a murder investigation in the nearby village of La Mort Rouge. Holmes had received a letter from Lady Penrose asking for his assistance as she feared for her life. It was too late however as she had already been killed by the time he received it. Her throat was torn out and the local villagers are spreading rumors about monsters and evil spirits as being the cause. Holmes doesn’t believe any of that and sets out to find the killer. He believes that Lady Penrose’s past as an actress may have something to with her death. As others in the village are attacked, Holmes believes the killer is among them, impersonating a local villager as he goes about his business.

Atmospheric, well-cast and much different from its brethren, The ScarletClaw looks and feels more like a classic late Universal horror film thananyof the other Holmes movies. Spoilers follow.The concept of a murder mystery where the killer turns out to be one personbehind many faces is always entertaining and it is well-done here. Thisfilm is interesting too because, more than any other Holmes film I know inany series, Holmes fails repeatedly — to stop the killer and even toapprehend him at the end. It is far different in that respect from thetraditional Holmes tale, where Holmes is always at least one step ahead ofhis adversary. Finally, the years have lent the story a touch ofunintended, grim humor. One of the elements the story uses to divertsuspicion away from the killer’s main identity is the idea that no onewouldever suspect a postman of violent crime. Times change.

While there, he grabs the attention of a man named Harper, who works for the CIA and would like him to finish his studies and get a job on Wall Street so he can find out of any terrorist plot through their finances. A few years later, Ryan finds anomalies in the accounts of a Russian named Cherevin. Jack thinks he should go to Russia to find out what’s going on. Jack was told not to tell anyone who he is and that includes his girl friend Cathy. But she catches Jack in some lies which makes her doubt him. Jack goes to Russia and Cherevin assigns him someone to take care of him. But when they’re alone the man tries to kill Jack. So Jack kills him. Obvious Cherevin is hiding …

When I was a child, I used to walk out of movies all the time withchills and a sense of awe and wonder, thinking that was the best movieI had ever seen. However, that’s because I WAS a child and at the time,any movie was automatically on that list.It has been a LONG time since I had that feeling. Usually, I now walkout of the theater saying “Yeah, that was a great movie, but it’s notone of the best I have ever seen.””RUSH” was different. When I walked out of that movie, I had thosechills and that sense of awe and wonder again. Not only did that moviehave me at the edge of my seat at every turn like a good racing movieshould, but I can safely say that that movie had the bestcinematography that I have ever seen in any film. More often than not,I was sitting there thinking “Holy s**t, how did they get a shot likethat??” To this day, when I think about that movie, I still ask myselfthat question. I would not be surprised in the least if this movie winsthe Academy Award for Best Cinematography.

Roger Moore is in uncharacteristic surroundings here, in a very adultthriller. He plays a Chicago psychiatrist who tops the polic’s suspect listwhen a number of people start getting bumped off in the city. You see, allthose that are dead are patients at his clinic. As suspicion mounts, Mooredoes the only thing he can and takes the investigation into his own hands,hoping to clear his name by catching the real killer(s)himself.Also involved in the film are Rod Steiger and Elliot Gould, both givingenjoyable performances as cops investigating the crimes. The story takes itsinspiration from a Sidney Sheldon bestseller, and unfolds fairlyintriguingly with various red herrings and killings tossed into the mix atregular intervals. However, the film isn’t perfect by a long stretch of theimagination. For a start, the peculiar assassination at the end is supposedto be a twist of some sort, but it makes little sense. Also, the solution tothe murders isn’t that great (in fact, it’s been six years since I saw thefilm and I can’t remember exactly how it all gets resolved). Nonetheless,the film is probably worth a look, especially if you’ve never seen Moore inone of his more unstereotypical roles.

Since I have not seen the original Maniac (1980) hence this movie forme had no prerequisite anticipatory factor attached to it. Also sinceslasher movie genre doesn’t hold so much of a charm on me so I tookthis movie in a stride, if you know what I mean. I was highly impressedby Elijah Wood in Sin City, his cold calculated cannibalistic killerportrayal had an allure to it and just so as to revisit that coldness Iwent into Maniac.Now one thing I can guarantee about Maniac is it’s quite difficult tostay indifferent to it. It’s ruthlessly executed. The P.O.V approach isspot on, for then you truly tend to understand what goes inside thathead of his. After a point of time it turns into a personal experienceof sorts and this is what P.O.V brings to the table. The strain and theblurry visions when Frank has those migraines reciprocates his own painand you first hand live through his troubled life, feeding into hisdreams and upon his preys. It would be incorrect to call Maniac aslasher movie, it does have elements resembling the Slasher genre butin it’s nuances you find a whole gamut of emotions colliding andforging his actions. It explores Frank inside out and in turn generatessympathy for him. His loneliness and his apprehensions in confrontinghis emotions tend to make him more than a simple antagonist. As Frankyou feel cheated, angry and a sick desperation to manifest theseemotions into something violent.
