After kind of “playing either hard to get orannoyed”, she realizes that he is going to war and probably won’t comeback. Her eternal fiancГ© Sam (Walter Pigeon) is a true gentleman indoing a good deed to give some hope to this poor condemned soldier.Daisy (who is very well educated in real life – Harvard) initiallydoing a kind act of the heart is slowly seduced by the simplicity andgenuineness of this young cowboy’s heart.This story touched me deeply and I identified strongly to it. MargaretSullavan is very articulate and so kind that she accepts to marry thisyoung recruit because to him “she is a dream come true that may keephim alive during the years of hell that he will endure…” Years,Americans were very patriotic and draft/conscription was a fact of lifefor most young males. As a Veteran of three wars (Kosovo, Afghanistanand Iraq), I paid dearly for my own dreams of saving my country fromthe “commies” – I was raised in the late fifties. On one day of May2003, on my 118th mission, my number came up; I woke up minuteslater… disabled for life.I witnessed war, I saw destruction, and I experienced fear not to sayterror. I shared room with many dismembered service members, some didnot make it, some died with me as their only companion.

What About movie – US Airborne colonel James Cooper accepts a daredevil mission to liberate just before the impending end of the Vietnamese war some POW’s which the Vietcong refuses to exchange, from a camp that officially doesn’t even exist. he alone survives the blowing up up his team’s extraction helicopter and is captured himself. The Vietcong camp commander, captain Vinh, collected a small fortune in gold looted from POWs and wants to buy a new life in the US, so he offers Cooper freedom for help, but is turned down. Just before a convoy arrives to deport the prisoners to Hanoi, Cooper accepts if all Americans may come with them. An adventurous chase follows, fighting each-other as well as Vietcong, not to mention selfish rogue Sparks’s tendency to mess everything up. Near the border, Cooper insists to come to the rescue of a trapped US unit’s survivors.

The POW movie is a genre that was at the height of it’s popularity inthe 1950/60’s sometimes giving an amusing almost nostalgic gloss of thetreatment of prisoners during WW2, therefore this movie (made in 1943)is an entertaining if somewhat historically dubious entry into thecategory.The movie opens just before France falls to the Germans in 1940, with agroup of French soldiers rounded up and placed in a camp ran by themost sadastic Nazi’s Hollywood conjure up, amongst them one of the1940’s favourite villain’s Peter Lorre. The movie is gritty, the Nazi’sgleefully watching the men tear each other apart over bread, shooting aPriest for praying or brutally kicking chained up men in the face.Seeing Gene Kelly’s battered face, (effective and shocking make-up)whatpatriotic, moral human wouldn’t want to spit a huge, gob of saliva in aNazi’s face or cheer when the hero stabs a Nazi in the throat. In factsome of the scenes were so shocking when the film was first shown,audiences walked out as the gore was just too much. Yet the movie wasnever charged with exaggeration as it was based on “A Thousand ShallFall” by Hans Habe, himself a refugee from the Nazis.In reality, POW conditions of Western prisoners while not a holidaywere tolerable, one character even shouts “this is not a concentrationcamp I have rights” but it is not in the interest of the producers todwell on this or the Geneva Convention. The movie stirs patriotism fromthe minute La Marseillaise booms over the credits.

World War II has always been a treasure trove of some of the finestmoments of heroism known to Hollywood. For this offering, tinsel townselected a novel by John Hersey and made a movie called, “The WarLover.” The late Steve McQueen, was very proud of his role as Capt.Rickson, during the filming. Added to that was the cast and crew fromhis co-star Robert Wagner as Lt. Ed Bolland, to the supporting actors,Gary Cockrell as Lt. Marty Lynch, Michael Crawford as Sgt. JuniorSailen and multi-talented Robert Easton as Sgt. Handown enhance thisfine war time saga. The well written story about the war, it’s effectson the characters and their ability to cope with it is what makes thismovie a classic. Occasionally some pearls of wisdom are uttered whichmakes one think, such as the phase spoken by the Flight Surgeon Randall(Bernard Braden) who said, “I consider war to be a complete cession ofrational thought.” That is true, not to mention memorable. Like thetale itself which zeros in on the men, their loves and their ownmortality. All in all, a worthy Classic from the Greatest generation.

What About movie – Genoa, 1943. Grimaldi is a swindler, pretending to be a colonel in the Italian army to get money from the family of people put into jail by the Nazis. Once caught, the Gestapo makes a deal with him : he will stay alive if he impersonates the General Della Rovere, a leader of the Resistance who has just been shot by the Nazis, to be put into a political jail where he is supposed to identify another Resistance leader.

If it hadn’t been about Ernest Hemingway the move would have been amediocre, quickly digested and forgotten romance. If you know anythingabout Hemingway the movie is basically unwatchable. Chris O’Donnel’s”Hemingway” is nothing but your stereotypical, one dimensional “kidgoes off to war” type and seems to bear no relation to Hemingwayhimself. Sandra Bullock manages to bring a little depth to hercharacter which I am guessing was dead on the page. She earned a littlerespect from me in that regard.If you want to watch this movie because you are interested in thesubject matter, for the love of God skip it. If you just want to watcha mindless romance and you’ve chosen this one because it’s the mostavailable to you at the moment, go ahead I guess, just don’t feel likeyou’ve learned something from it.

Army General Mark Clark authenticates Claire Phillips’ adventures and achievements, as an American citizen who rendered invaluable services to her country in Manila during the Japanese occupation, and at the end, when she is presented a medal by a Presidential representative: Claire Phillips, a cafe entertainer in Manila, marries a U.S. soldier on December 8, 1941, after the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese, and when he is killed fighting the Japanese invasion of the Phillipines, she returns to her calling as a means of obtaining and transmitting to the American and Filipino guerillas information, supplies and services which the Filipino underground uses in its aid to the Allied forces fighting the Japanese invaders. She has narrow escapes from detection and detention, until she is finally exposed as a spy, arrested, convicted and imprisoned.

This is a good movie about a real life character. It has to be viewed inthecontext of thetime. It was shortly after the war and the wounds left by the Japanesetreatment ofprisoners of war were still deeply felt. Some of the acting is a littleoverthe top bytoday’s standards.But, watch it, and try to imagine going through what these people (theallied POW’s)went through.I enjoyed it. And I appreciate their sacrifice.

Ann Dvorak is real-life spy Claire Phillips in “I Was an American Spy,”a 1951 film also starring Gene Evans (known to baby boomers as thefather in My Friend Flicka on TV) and with a prologue and an appearanceat the end of the film by General Mark Clark.Though the movie takes the usual dramatic license, it does tell thetrue story of Claire Phillips, a woman living in Manila with herdaughter when the war broke out. After she becomes a widow, Phillipshelps the Americans by changing her identity and starting a gentlemen’sclub in Manila, which becomes popular with the Japanese soldiers. Fromher club, she provides information, food, boots, and medicine to thesoldiers and prisoners of war (although if prisoners of war werementioned in the film, I missed it). Her code name is “High Pockets”because she would put notes in her brassiere.If Claire Phillips did a third of what Ann Dvorak portrays in this film– and I think actually she did much more — one can see why she wasgiven the Medal of Freedom.

Don’t be discouraged by this Soviet film’s age or obscurity – it is oneof the finest movies ever made, and it stands alongside Carl TheodoreDreyer’s “The Passion of Joan of Arc,” as the most modernist film ofthe 1920’s. This is a spectacular visual achievement, and its visionaryconception of cinema is moderinism that we’ve still failed to catch upwith. Unlike most recognized masterpieces of Soviet silent cinema (e.g.”The Battleship Potempkin,” “Earth,” “The End of St. Petersburg,”etc.), however, “Arsenal” is a surprisingly approachable film, and itsstrangeness and abstraction are consistently fascinating. Originallyintended as a propaganda film, “Arsenal” is the second component ofdirector Alexander Dovzhenko’s “Ukraine Trilogy,” and it details anepisode in the Russian Civil War (~1918) in which the Kiev Arsenalworkers aided the Bolshevik army against the ruling Central Rada.Dovzhenko’s approach is somewhat similar to Sergei Eisentein, in thathe relied heavily on montage, but his pace was less frenetic, and hisExpressionism was more exaggerated. As detailed in the film’s academiccommentary, Dovzhenko was previously a political cartoonist, and youcan see traces of this background in “Arsenal.” The characters in thisfilm are caricatures, sometimes grotesque and sometimes funny.Similarly, there is a strangeness and remoteness in “Arsenal,” whichmakes the film’s few intentionally lucid passages quite dreamlike.

Despite some very glossy MGM B&W photography, as shown in the goodprint of this film aired by TCM, and some attractive sets and veryAdrian-created costumes for JOAN CRAWFORD, TODAY WE LIVE is a film asgeneric as its title. It’s hard to distinguish from any other triangleromance except that the war background gives it added interest.The script is a strange affair. It’s hard to believe that JOAN CRAWFORDand GARY COOPER would openly declare their deep love for each otherafter exchanging a few glances across a cup of tea. In the very nextscene they’re hopelessly in love, with Crawford feeling guilt becauseshe’s the fiancГ© of ROBERT YOUNG.Young’s brother is the carefree FRANCHOT TONE (who walks off with theearlier scenes in the film), while ROBERT YOUNG gets his chance to do afair share of emoting later in the film as his role expands. It’s niceseeing these well-known actors at an early stage in their buddingcareers and still in their prime.For GARY COOPER fans this is nothing special, but Crawford’s admirerswill find that she was at the height of her photogenic, sculpturedbeauty despite some odd dress designs by Adrian that don’t suggestanything but the studio’s line of glamor during the early ’30s. Shewears a boldly designed dress with a strange wing collar that has to beseen to be believed. It’s hilarious! And that’s just so she can pourtea with some dignity.The actors all speak in clipped lines.

In the process of all this, the mule assisted in uncovering a spy, Mareen, who pretended to be lost among the jungles, but was actually… This is a perfect family film, even amusing to the adults. If people all have enough sense as this talking mule does, the world will be a much better place than its present condition.

When World War II breaks out, one working class family (The Crowson’s)find themselves playing their part in the war effort. Dad joins the wareffort, elder daughter Celia signs up to serve and youngest daughterElsie is to work in a factory. While the two daughters try to fit inwhere they are placed, it is Elsie that takes to the working classlabour better, even thought some of her colleagues from the upperclasses don’t fit in as well. Meanwhile, back at home, Dad finds thebattle against dishes and housework to be even more of a challenge thanthe battle against the Hun.Although it is clearly a propaganda film in essence, this wartime dramais quite interesting for not being as simplistic as some of its peers.In this family drama we don’t really have a message pushed that hardbut are instead left to draw out own warmth from a narrative that has asurprising amount about class within it. In this regard it does producesome interesting threads although those looking back for sharp commentwill not find it because this is still a melodrama with a propagandaedge. As such it is a bit plodding at times but I still quite enjoyedit for what it was although I can understand why some viewers havefound it a bit dull and lacking in sharpness.The cast are pretty good with the material. Roc and Dunn give good ifunspectacular turns as the daughters while Marriott provides a workingclass comic relief to proceedings as the father.

Director MIchel Drach tells here his own story,when he was a childduring WW2.The film is a long flashback;Trintignant plays a director(actually Drach)who wants to transfer a screenplay -see above- to thescreen.If my memory serves me,cause it’s been a long time since Iwatched this flick for the last time,present scenes are shot in blackand white whereas past sequences are in color.Drach remembers.It was WW2,and Jews were arrested .His mother (playedby Drach’s then wife Marie-JosГ© Nat)had to escape from France and itwas not an easy thing to do ,because of her compatriots ‘ greed.There’sa wonderful part of a grand-mother ,marvelously played by GabrielleDoulcet who tries to explain to her grandson the absurdity of theanti-Semitism.Nat won the best actress prize at the festival de Cannes1974. Should appeal to people who like films like ” Au nom de tous lesmiens” (story of Martin Gray ,directed by Robert Enrico),”un sac debilles” and of course “the diary of Anne Frank”.
