What can i say about this movie? I have seen it quite a few times sincethefirst time when i was around 6. I have seen the english version and it isdone very well. It is a great movie for all ages, but it is directed morefor children. I love the childlike humor and appreciate it.

Even though I was born a couple of decades after this movie wasreleased, I wanted to watch it when it played on TV because it wasgiven a perfect 5/5 rating by my local newspaper’s TV listings. When Ituned in, I was even more excited when I found out that it was a DavidWolper and Mel Stuart collaboration because I really loved ‘Willy Wonkaand the Chocolate Factory.’ It’s a shame that ‘If It’s Tuesday ThisMust Be Belgium’ is not available on DVD. Even though it was made about30 years ago, the misadventures of the ensemble cast are as funny asever. The fine balance between the witty humor and acerbic banter inthis movie is something that is rare in movies today. The only moviesthat come close are a few of Wes Anderson’s (Rushmore, RoyalTenenbaums, The Life Aquatic), but instead of being faux retro, ‘IfIt’s Tuesday This Must Be Belgium’ really is retro. It shows all ofEurope’s fabled landmarks in the tongue-and-cheek manner that you can’tget from any movie unless it really was made in 1969. I liked the partwhen the group was at a cheese market in Amsterdam and the tour guidesays, “There’s an auction of gouda cheeses and edam cheeses. And prettygood-a edam cheeses they are.” That is like so corny it’s funny. Afterwatching this movie, I actually did want to take a European bus tour!But the best thing about this movie is its great cast, particularly thebeautiful Suzanne Pleshette and the devilishly handsome Ian McShane.

I just purchased the DVD of Pal Joey and the picture and colors arebreathtaking. It is wonderful to see the scope of 1957 Frisco in digitalWidescreen. I will say that those expecting a full, true musical, might bedissappointed. It is a lighthearted movie that contains songs. AND WHATSONGS THEY ARE. The Rogers and Hart songs never sounded better and it isalways a treat to SEE Sinatra perform them, especially here in 1957 when hewas at the peak of his artistry. The look and feel of the movie is quitemodern, and although tame in comparison to modern films, the script is coyand sexy. It is lighthearted fun and entertainment and all do a fine job intheir roles. (Sinatra won a Golden Globe for best actor) . One could onlyhope that they hurry and remaster the rest of the Sinatra catalog on DVD. Next should be “Hole in the Head”. I welcome any and all comments…emailme!!

It took 17 years for the play PAL JOEY to reach the screen, and eventhoughthis ‘Joey’ is watered-down, the film is still thirst-quenchingto first time viewers. The differences between play and film havebeenexaggerated. San Francisco (film) and Chicago (play) are related.Whatdoes grate on people who “know the score”,in both senses, is the lossofhalf the stage songs to background music. They are wonderful and I can-notsee why Frank Sinatra wouldn’t have begged to sing them. I thinkthat Rita Hayworth, sadly aging (at 39 she looked 49), is extremelyunderrated as ‘Vera’.

For anyone wanting to find out about the real life Babe Ruth, this”true story” should be avoided at all costs! Created in 1920, this filmpurports to be about the Bambino and his rise to fame, but franklyalmost none of it bears any similarity to the slugger. In the film,he’s a small town boy who is shy and unassuming. In real life, he grewup in the “rustic small town” of Baltimore, Maryland and was a bit of ajuvenile delinquent–but I guess this image makes for a ratherunappealing film! Now the fact that they played so fast and loose withthe facts wasn’t totally awful–after all, many of our heroes of timespast have an aura of fiction about them. But the fiction they createdis so schmaltzy and saccharine that it becomes almost laughable. Babedoes practically everything in the film but walk on water and heal thesick! The fact that many at the time believed this is what is soamazing about this film. The only truth in the film is that the writersdescribe his as ugly–something I am surprised Ruth allowed. I guess hewasn’t too hung up about his looks.Speaking of looks, Babe is quite young in the film–and rather trimafter his first season with the Yankees. Oddly, though, he’d been avery famous pitcher with the Red Sox but this is never alluded to inthe film–but his prowess with the bat sure is. In fact, in the moviehe made the bat himself–something reminiscent of Robert Redford’scharacter in THE NATURAL.

One of the wonderful aspects of cinema is that all the various originalityof a culture can be presented, in any combination, with their indigenousvisual and aural realities. The arid outback, the aussie dialect, and theDown Under idea of Wacky combine in this oh-so-funny film to bring you totears from laughing so hard. You’ll find yourself rewinding to see a greatslapstick scene again, or to hear exactly what someone said. A quick takewill clarify a confusing one several scenes earlier causing renewed laughteryet again. When the credits began rolling I began laughing again atremembered shots still teasing my memory. And laughter isn’t all this filmhas to offer – bits of poignance, ire, and mystery are added to the recipeto round out its flavor. The story could only have been told in Australiaby Australians to acheive so great result.

With all due repect to the user who somehow remembers the ancient Republicserials doing a better live action/effects mix that this high-tech Sixtiesextravaganza, you really won’t see the join in Medding’s seamlessrecreationof a British motorway (built in one third scale and mixed with realmotorwayshots for the climactic Tigermoth escape sequence). Indeed, so realisticisthis shot that on the DVD commentary Sylvia Anderson (who spends most ofhertime pointing out the live action shots vs the model shots, like we reallyneed to know) exclaimes “now that’s definitely not a model shot!”. SorrySylv, love, it is and it’s quite likely the best you’ll ever see (or behoodwinked by). If you love Thunderbirds, the Andersons or just damn fineeffect work, come worship at the alter of Derek Meddings: see ThunderbirdSix.

Thunderbirds had made a major impact in British TV, leading to the 1966theatrical release Thunderbirds Are Go, but disappointing box office returnsand lack of interest from major US networks (the show was syndicated in theUS instead of picked up by one of the three big broadcasters) causedcancellation of the series. Despite this, one more theatrical film wasprepared, and the resulting film has proven to be a highlight of theThunderbirds epic despite once again suffering from disappointing box officereturns.

Done in the tradition of “Red River (1946) this is the story of the LandBaron Vs the small ranchers, but this time from the Land Baron’s point ofview. This movie is a fantastic movie. Everything about it in my opinion wastop notch from the acting to the directing. I know Mr. Garfield wasblacklisted in the 1950’s but the majority of his other films are onvideo if not DVD. That being the case,why isn’t this one? A friendrecorded it off of TCM for me but to have it on DVD would be great. Forspecial features they could have say a Marine historian talk about thebattle and if Mr. Schmid’s wife or son are still alive they could beinterviewed as well. Anyway this is a great movie and I highlyrecommend it.If it ever is put out hopefully it won’t be colorized.Colorizing it would in my opinion just ruin the whole effect of thefilm. The battle scene was quite realistic as far as a 1945,film wouldgo. Mr. Garfield did a superb job of portraying Mr. Schmid. Some actorsmight have been tempted to overact the part of Mr.Schmid’s disabilitybut I feel he got it just right. I sincerely hope they come out withthis movie on DVD someday as a tribute to the courage of Al Schmid andall the other marines who sacrificed so much for us in World War Two.

The film begins on a small Polynesian island where Movita lives alongwith her people. A White guy (Warren Hull) washes up on the beach andshe nurses him back to health. Once he regained his strength, she findsout he was on a ship that wrecked that was taking him to see a doctorabout an operation to restore his sight, though Movita is thrilled tokeep him whether he’s blind or not. Unfortunately, a young islanderloves her and wants her new boyfriend to go, so he makes a dangerousvoyage in a small boat to other islands to try and find this doctor. Inthe meantime, the only other White man on the island is a dirt-bag thatdecides to pretend to have the doctor to cheat Movita out of her mostdesirable treasure–a huge black pearl. After cheating her and givingHull false hope, all is not lost as the real doctor shows and operates.But will Hull stay behind or abandon his loyal Movita? Watch this filmand see for yourself.This is a very capably done movie by poverty row studio, Monogram.Considering how cheap the productions generally were, this is a verygood Monogram film. However, being not especially interesting orcompelling, it’s nothing more than a time-passer that has lapsed intothe public domain.
