It has all the trappings of an entertaining musical, but the chemistryis not there. A few of the musical numbers are worth seeing, but manyare mediocre at best. The most peculiar thing about the movie is itssubstitution of boring, pedestrian new songs to take the place of ColePorter’s songs. Although Jimmy Van Heusen certainly composed some goodsongs in his day, the present “Ya Gotta Give the People Hoke,” “BounceRight Back,” and “A Second-Hand Turban” are embarrassing. The producerscouldn’t find 3 more Cole Porter songs to use instead? Adding to theembarrassment is the bowdlerization of the song “Anything Goes,” inwhich Mitzi Gayner is not even permitted to refer to authors'”four-letter words.” Instead, we are nonsensically told that authorsnowadays use only “three-letter words.” Of course, such censoring ofthe lyrics of this song negate the entire premise of the song, which isthat anything is permitted nowadays.Donald O’Connor has a very nice dance routine with children and a lotof bouncing balls in “Bounce Right Back,” which is the most originalnumber in the film. The comedy duos by O’Connor and Crosby fall flat,as does the vocal by Jeanmaire. Indeed, after hearing the mangledarrangement of her trying to sing “I Get a Kick Out of You,” I actuallystopped the movie and played a Frank Sinatra version in order to getthe bad taste out of my ears. Mitzi Gayner is lively and attractive anddoes a good job in belting out her songs.

MGM has a lot to answer for. A great deal of time, money, and marveloustalent went into “Mark of the Vampire,” only to find 15 minutes (that’s20 percent) of it left on the cutting room floor. Releasing a scant60-minute movie, the studio reportedly cut the comic relief and alsovery obviously cut material crucial to continuity and consistency. The plot is left so full of holes that I doubt I could have followedthe action if it hadn’t been for the number of familiar actors, alldoing fine work here: the Lionels Barrymore and Atwill, Gene Hersholt,Donald Meek, and especially Bela Lugosi, who is given only onedelicious line, absolutely worth the wait. Even more impressive than the cast is Todd Browning’s direction (what’sleft of it), Cedric Gibbons’ classic sets (ditto), and the gorgeouschiaroscuro photography and fluid camera-work of James Wong Howe (andditto).Whether or not you approve of it, the surprise ending is a botch job.The movie plays like a straight vampire movie— disastrously edited, butcaptivating all the same. Then comes the last 10 minutes. You feelcheated, and not just because the movie abruptly transmogrifies into avampire-free murder mystery: The action was all elaborately staged toentrap a murderer by a detective, a professor, a girl, a butler, actorsplaying vampires, and a menagerie of real bats, rodents, and what Ithink was a huge scorpion. The real problem is those inconsistencies.

This film demonstrates an excellent use of both dialog andcinematography to evoke a mysterious, yet stark atmosphere. Redgrave isespecially excellent in her portrayal of a character that defies easydescription or explanation. The score, too, works to create a specificplace, but never falls to the easy trap of using simple folk-musicstyles in order to provide a sonic backdrop.Overall, The Ballad of the Sad Cafe is a haunting and beautifulexploration of human emotions and inhuman behaviors. I would highlyrecommend this film to everyone interested in an eerie combination ofthe real and surreal.

Awaiting something in the neighborhood of Breaking Dawn, I must admit Iwas disappointed. Not from Kellys acting, although she at times hadsome trouble too. But then, you can’t lead the movie all by yourself.The rest was, I have to say, pathetic. The villain should focus on someexpressive acting. I mean, where’s a Malkovich when you need one,right? And I’m still trying to understand why somebody gave this moviea prize for editing, no offense. For instance, look at the scenesbetween Kelly and the bad girl (don’t remember her name, doesn’tmatter) at the nice guys place. Mirror in the back, distracting, hitwithout blood (and the punch was dubbed close to a Rocky’s cross, afterall, it’s a movie, we are talking hyper-reality here, people). Then theguy from behind chloroforming her (and that passing out was really bad,too, sorry Kelly). Can you see him in one scene, then not, then again?I mean, did any of the staff actually watch the movie after it wasfinished? And don’t talk to me about budget, either. I think theBlairwitch Project went on an even lower budget, and it was freaky,followed by a sequel, and rocked the Hollyworld to a completely newmovie experience level.

It’s very rare that a film manages to sear an image into one’s mindpowerful enough to stay for years. This simple little film fromNewfoundland/Labrador really managed to do that for me. I first sawthis film back in… I’m pretty sure it was in elementary school.Anyway, the storyline itself is very straightforward and plays withsome fairly familiar ‘human-centric’ thematics. This focus on emotioncan surely be appreciated on the narrative level. And, sure, the actingis commendable.But the best films surely have something more thanstoryline/acting/narrative elements going for them. The best films havea *uniquely cinematic* element as well. A purely visual element. To mysurprise, this unassuming film turned out to have that cinematicelement. Or I’ve certainly realized so over the years, as it has stuckin my mind. Or one image in particular certainly has. As you’re perhapsaware, there are a few things in life that are ‘inherently cinematic’,one could say. Fireworks? Human faces? Automobiles? … Water. Thisfilm might actually contain the best use of water as an inherentlycinematic element. It only comes near the end, if I’m recallingcorrectly, and involves the house in question. You’ll know it when you see it. It sticks in the mind. It’s memorableas hell. … So this is most certainly a sadly neglected film. Evenwhen Canadian cinema is discussed, this very rarely gets mentioned.Well, fine, then it can always be remembered as an overlooked gem.

They work very hard and become welcome citizens of their new town, Eureka. They have six children. They prosper in the husband’s boat building business. But when their eldest is 12, tragedy strikes the family, and the 12-year old is burdened with a terrible task which he handles as well as any adult could.

Johnny Mera Naam is perhaps Vijay Anand’s best directed movie. Releasedin 1970, this movie went on to cause a stir as did the music as it wasconsidered to be beyond its time.Two brothers,Sohan and Mohan, both studying in the same school, haveentered the school boxing competition. When the final comes it the twobrothers find out that they are fighting each other. Sohan is declaredwinner but the match is continued at home and the mother tells themthat they should wait for their father. Mohan, the elder, beingimpatient, goes to see his father – a police officer. Instead hewitnesses a smuggler by the name of Heera murdering his father. He thentries to catch him by chasing him and lends up hiding in his car.Years pass by and Sohan becomes an Police inspector and wanting tocatch smugglers, he lands himself in a cell with the man who hadmurdered his father, Heera and introduces himself as “Johnny.” He laterescapes and meets up with a contact that he had been informed about byHeera – a female by the name of Rekha.The movie stars the ever green Dev Anand, Hema Malini, Pran, Premnath,Ifteqar and I.S. Johar. The story is good but more than that is thedirection by the late Vijay Anand. But the acting by all and especiallythe comic side by the late I.S. Johar, is absolutely brilliant. Thesongs to listen out for are “O Mere Raja,” “Baabul Pyaare,” “NafratKarne Waaloh” and “Parbhal Keliye” – they are most memorable as is themusic by Kalyanji – Anandji.

I think it’s a pity that they didn’t manage to work in the FrankLoesser song, “The Ballad of Rodger Young.” In the novel, thissong is a leitmotif…I am both a Heinlein fan and a liberal. (Hey, I admire Wagner’smusic, too…). I first read “Starship Soldiers” (the original title) intheMagazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction in 1959.I was fascinated by the film. Although like many Hollywoodadaptations it departs from the novel in many ways, I felt that itnevertheless was acceptably faithful to the original. Much more sothan, say, the George Pal version of “The Time Machine.”Heinlein’s politics are handled in an interesting and evasive,ambiguous way. They are, in fact, presented fairly accurately; but,just as the novel pretends to be set in the future but really reflectsWorld War II, the movie (somehow!) combines a Star Wars “look”with a Frank Capra World War II “look.” It must be a joy forcineastes, as it incorporates innumerable cliches, both indialogue and in “look,” from old war movies. To me, the effect wassatirical–and as a liberal AND Heinlein fan, that suits me justfine(In Heinlein’s novel, of course, the purely evil Bugs serve tosidestep any questions about the morality of war. Germans andJapanese are humans, Bugs are not).True, I wish the movie makers had chosen to depict theexoskeleton “suit” technology Heinlein describes. It would havebeen fun to see our soldiers leaping tall buildings in a singlebound.

I’d thought I’d seen the worst after open water but Hostel wins thathonor hands (or stumps) down.I bought this turkey after browsing the blurbs and pics on the back ofthe case. Looked to me like an organ for sale/black marketthriller/horror possibility — perhaps due to the surgical garb in onephoto. Not. It will not become a part of my collection — ever.There is no plot. Nothing believable. No chance for a thriller. Nothingto hold you engulfed in the moment along with the characters. Lawenforcement would shut down an operation (no pun intended) where kidsfrom wealthy (or not) families just disappear wholesale in big bleedingbatches. No care is taken in the selection of the unfortunates, anyoneis fair game. The only requirement is that you be mindlessly horny(never question why the perfect 10 has to have you) and extremely naiveso much so that it goes beyond belief. The rest is just hack and slashoh yeah, and saw.So, it is just gore for the sake of gore. Pretty sick and in the endjust sad. I should add SORRY to the list; sorry that I got SUCKED in(there’s another addition) to buying it based on the cover art, hypeand names attached to it. Anthony’s gift as a great preacher is discovered by happenstance. He spends much of his life in and near Padua, a city run by usurers. Anthony offers protection and friendship to Folco, at one time a petty criminal and acolyte to the usurers, later falsely accused of murder. Anthony’s teaching and his spiritual strength lead to changes in the character of Padua and an end to usury. He became its patron Saint soon after his death, and 32 years later, his casket is opened and his tongue remains intact.

For anyone wanting to find out about the real life Babe Ruth, this”true story” should be avoided at all costs! Created in 1920, this filmpurports to be about the Bambino and his rise to fame, but franklyalmost none of it bears any similarity to the slugger. In the film,he’s a small town boy who is shy and unassuming. In real life, he grewup in the “rustic small town” of Baltimore, Maryland and was a bit of ajuvenile delinquent–but I guess this image makes for a ratherunappealing film! Now the fact that they played so fast and loose withthe facts wasn’t totally awful–after all, many of our heroes of timespast have an aura of fiction about them. But the fiction they createdis so schmaltzy and saccharine that it becomes almost laughable. Babedoes practically everything in the film but walk on water and heal thesick! The fact that many at the time believed this is what is soamazing about this film. The only truth in the film is that the writersdescribe his as ugly–something I am surprised Ruth allowed. I guess hewasn’t too hung up about his looks.Speaking of looks, Babe is quite young in the film–and rather trimafter his first season with the Yankees. Oddly, though, he’d been avery famous pitcher with the Red Sox but this is never alluded to inthe film–but his prowess with the bat sure is. In fact, in the moviehe made the bat himself–something reminiscent of Robert Redford’scharacter in THE NATURAL.
