MGM has a lot to answer for. A great deal of time, money, and marveloustalent went into “Mark of the Vampire,” only to find 15 minutes (that’s20 percent) of it left on the cutting room floor. Releasing a scant60-minute movie, the studio reportedly cut the comic relief and alsovery obviously cut material crucial to continuity and consistency. The plot is left so full of holes that I doubt I could have followedthe action if it hadn’t been for the number of familiar actors, alldoing fine work here: the Lionels Barrymore and Atwill, Gene Hersholt,Donald Meek, and especially Bela Lugosi, who is given only onedelicious line, absolutely worth the wait. Even more impressive than the cast is Todd Browning’s direction (what’sleft of it), Cedric Gibbons’ classic sets (ditto), and the gorgeouschiaroscuro photography and fluid camera-work of James Wong Howe (andditto).Whether or not you approve of it, the surprise ending is a botch job.The movie plays like a straight vampire movie— disastrously edited, butcaptivating all the same. Then comes the last 10 minutes. You feelcheated, and not just because the movie abruptly transmogrifies into avampire-free murder mystery: The action was all elaborately staged toentrap a murderer by a detective, a professor, a girl, a butler, actorsplaying vampires, and a menagerie of real bats, rodents, and what Ithink was a huge scorpion. The real problem is those inconsistencies.

All of thelesser actors fulfill their roles quite nicely, too.

MargaretSullavan is very articulate and so kind that she accepts to marry thisyoung recruit because to him “she is a dream come true that may keephim alive during the years of hell that he will endure…” Years,Americans were very patriotic and draft/conscription was a fact of lifefor most young males. As a Veteran of three wars (Kosovo, Afghanistanand Iraq), I paid dearly for my own dreams of saving my country fromthe “commies” – I was raised in the late fifties. On one day of May2003, on my 118th mission, my number came up; I woke up minuteslater… disabled for life.I witnessed war, I saw destruction, and I experienced fear not to sayterror. I shared room with many dismembered service members, some didnot make it, some died with me as their only companion.

I was in a local video store that was closing down and selling offtheir stock, a trend these days it seems due to the emergence ofNetflix and the like, and noticed this film. It caught my attentionbecause I’m a pilot so I bought it ($2).It wasn’t at all what I’d expected but I was pleasantly surprised nonethe less. The cinematography and acting are exceptional. The story is alittle slow but holds your interest and you become invested in thecharacters as the movie moves along. They seemed real to me. That aloneis saying a lot considering some of what is foisted upon the viewingpublic these days.While I would classify this as a family movie it does contain some darkmaterial dealing with sexual abuse so I would not say it was for youngchildren. Still and all, it was a pleasant viewing experience and Ifound it head and shoulders above a lot of what is produced inHollywood these days.I would recommend Spin for anyone looking for a well done, mostlypleasant viewing experience.

What About movie – The cynical and skeptical writer Mike Enslin writes books evaluating supernatural phenomena in hotels, graveyards and other haunted places, usually debunking the mystery. While writing his latest book, he travels from Los Angeles to New York to spend one night in the Dolphin Hotel’s evil room 1408, which is permanently unavailable for guests. The reluctant manager Mr. Gerald Olin objects to his request and offers an upgrade, expensive booze and finally relates the death of more than fifty guests over decades in the cursed room. However Mike threatens Mr. Olin, promising to sue the hotel, and is finally allowed to check into the room. Later in the night, he finds that guests of room 1408, once they have checked in, might never leave the room alive.

He is the author of books that detail anddebunk popular ghost stories and haunted hot-spots, and it quicklybecomes obvious that he is somewhat disenchanted with the life that heleads. That is, of course, until he receives an invitation to Room 1408at the Dolphin Hotel, a room in which lies his and arguably JohnCusack’s biggest challenge yet.It soon becomes apparent that 1408 is not your standard horror movie,as what follows, after an enjoyably creepy encounter with hotel managerGerald Olin (Samuel L Jackson), is essentially 90 minutes of JohnCusack in a room. On his own. Save for, of course, whatever lurksinside 1408. It is a challenge that Cusack rises to expertly; we allknow he’s a good actor and a brilliant everyman (I don’t remember afilm in which I’ve wanted to see him crash and burn), but 1408 allowshim to display his range to great effect as the room confronts him withthe physical dangers of the present and the emotional tragedies of hispast. While it’s relatively light on big scares, 1408 instead creates apowerful sense of unease that combines wonderfully with Cusack’sportrayal of a man enduring his own private hell.

“Nothings gonna stop this thing, you hear me.” Henry (Scott) is aformer Navy Seal who is working as a forest ranger on the US/Canadianborder. When a drug cartel led by Xander (Van Damme) shows up they wanthelp finding their drug shipment that has gone missing. At the sametime someone connected to Henry’s past shows up with a grudge againsthim looking for revenge. This is a hard movie to review. It is a VanDamme movie so you know what to expect even though this is a littledifferent then most of his recent films. The big difference in this isthat he is a bad guy. I think its because of his age but the actionsequences in his new movies aren’t nearly as cool as they used to be.The movie itself though isn’t that terrible and in terms of B moviesits OK. The most interesting aspect is between Henry and the man whothreatens him. Its pretty predictable but in a Van Damme movie that isexpected. Overall, Van Damme fans will like this, everyone else mayenjoy it. I expected worse.

I used to live down the street from Ross Thomas in DC and never had thechance to meet him. According to a story in the POST, Thomas and hiswife went out to Hollywood to see the filming. Bronson told him “Ididn’t read the book.” Thomas replied “That’s OK. I didn’t see yourlast movie.” Bronson was not Thomas’ or my idea of the St. Ivescharacter. St. Ives was a thinking man’s detective with a wry sense ofhumor. Bronson was capable of wry humor but he was miscast if you hadread the books. I think it was the Thomas novel filmed which is ashame. I think Charles Durning starred in a made-for-TV movie where heplayed a similar character who is a professional go-between.

Alfred Ollivant wrote the book “Owd Bob, Son of Battle,” an excellent dogstory. This movie is the third or fourth retelling of it. They’ve basicallybutchered the book. This movie twisted up all of the characters and thestory of Ollivant’s book. This is not always bad, but I don’t think itaddedanything to the story in this case.The dogs are central to this story. Although they are attractive BorderCollies, many aspects of the dogs are very inaccurate. For example, one ofthe main plot lines of the story deals with a killer dog–a dog that killssheep. In sheep country, a dog who kills sheep is totally unacceptable andwould be shot immediately. I suppose in a rare case an owner may find outand try to hide it, but even this is very rare. These are working dogs, anda working dog can’t be a sheep killer. It’s an instant death warrant.Furthermore, these sheep killers get smart. If they kill a sheep and comehome with blood on their face and fleece in their teeth they KNOW they’llbeshot. They clean up. But the sheep killer in this movie keeps coming backtohis owner with a bloody face, and his owner cleans him up, and keeps quiet.This movie totally ignores this basic fact.Furthermore, when the dogs are in the sheepherding competition, one of thedogs (not a main character) herds sheep excellently. But when the maincharacter dogs begin their sheepherding, it’s pathetic. The dog is justshown jumping up and down somewhere in the vicinity of the sheep.
