What About movie – After the corrupt former Mayor is killed by the peasants, poor janitor Juan Vargas is appointed new Mayor of a desert town in central Mexico. Although he tries to bring the motto of the ruling party to town (modernity, peace and progress) he realizes soon that there’s nothing to do against corruption… except to become corrupt. Step by step, helped by his pistol, Juan Vargas becomes the law and the worst Major in the town’s history.

Warsaw, December 1942. When a prostitute is savagely murdered, GermanIntelligence Officer Major Grau is called to investigate. An eyewitnesswho caught a glimpse of the perpetrator through a crack in a door,reveals that the killer wore grey trousers with a red stripe down theside – the uniform of a Wehrmact General. Grau quickly narrows thesuspects down to three men whose whereabouts on the night in questioncannot be accounted for.Having been aware of this film for many years, I finally managed tocatch a rare screening of it last night on British TV. Part of mycuriosity to see it was due to the sheer weight of the cast:- OmarSharif as Major Grau, Peter O’Toole, Donald Pleasence and Charles Grayas the Generals, plus Christopher Plummer, Tom Courtenay, PhilipNoiret, Gordon Jackson, John Gregson, Harry Andrews, Nigel Stock andPatrick Allen – phew! The film itself starts quite promisingly as amurder mystery and maintains the interest while based in Warsaw. Itfeatures an impressive sequence involving the flushing out of PolishResistance fighters in the city. An interesting side-note at this pointis that the armour used here appeared to be either real Tiger tanks, orpretty good replicas. This attention to detail was quite unusual for afilm made in 1966. Usually, contemporary armour was used in war filmsof this vintage – I’m thinking particularly of ‘Battle Of The Bulge’,’The Bridge At Remagen’ and even ‘Patton’.

Everywhere I look, people say that this is the best Mike Hammer film todate, and I can’t help but ask “why?” It just isn’t very Mike Hammer. Ifperhaps it was just a ripoff of the pulp classic “I, the Jury” with ArmandAssante, I would have enjoyed it. As a movie, it’s pretty goodconsideringit was pure 1980’s action. But as Mike Hammer, it’s weak.The biggest differences between true Mike Hammer and this movie is ArmandAssante’s portrayal. He does a fine acting job, but Hammer is MEAN andalways angry. In this, Assante is either manic depressive or smirking atthe bad guys that he just beat. Mike Hammer gets into fist fights.Armandjust pushes some people down stairs, doesn’t throw punches. At least theygot the ending right, although Armand Assante was still way toomelancholy.I can say several positive things about this movie. The scene whenAssantedoes a full assault on the criminal’s compound with an M-16 is welldirected, a good solid action scene (no way connected with the book).Veldaand Assante’s love interests were both more interesting to watch than therest of the movie.In closing, I would like to say that Hollywood still has the chance tomakea good, solid film based on Mike Hammer. Two tips: FOLLOW THE BOOK.Regardless of which book you use, follow it. Spillane wrote better than90%of Hollywood anyways. And second, get someone who can be a mean anddownright angry Mike Hammer, not depressed.

Having just spent the last several days reviewing past Charlie Chanmovies in series chronological order, not to mention previouslyreviewing Charlie Chan in Paris back in 2006, I decided to finallywatch this spoof of the great Honolulu detective that I just bought onVHS from a used video store. In summary, this was a clumsy, jumbledslapstick mess that only rated a few chuckles from me due to some wittylines near the end. And Peter Ustinov is wasted as Chan as he soundsmore like an Englishman impersonating a Chinese man than moreconvincing portrayals from the likes of Warner Oland and Sidney Toler(I have yet to rewatch a Roland Winters one that I haven’t seen in 30years). And how convenient to have his grandson Lee, Jr.’s (RichardHatch) parents (one of whom is Jewish) be killed in a car crash so asnot to have Keye Luke make an appearance. (“No. 1 Son” as a young manhere is played by David Hirokane) The fact that he’s not there nor isEarl Derr Biggers credited as creator here is just as well since thismovie does nothing to honor their contributions. And the supportingcast of Hatch, Lee Grant, Rachel Roberts, Roddy McDowall, Brian Keith,and, in one of her earliest roles, Michelle Pfeiffer are just wasted aswell, never mind Angie Dickinson as the Dragon Queen. Director CliveDonner seems to want to do a Mel Brooks-like parody down to the BlazingSaddles-like climax but there’s nothing the least bit creatively funnyhere.

I’m 25 years old. I have no children. So why am I praising a ‘kid’smovie’which nobody saw? Because I have never seen a film pack the emotionalwallop ‘The Iron Giant’ provided.The film’s plot is similar to ‘E.T.’ – a young boy meets an alien robotfromouter space, who is stranded on earth, and runs afoul of paranoidgovernmentagents. Not to knock the Spielberg film, but what makes ‘The Iron Giant’the better film is that the young boy is the teacher. It is he who has toteach the Giant about the beauty of life, the difference between good andevil, and choices we have to make. The Iron Giant, it turns out, is aweapon, who has to struggle against his own nature. The film has anobvious(and timely) gun control message, but its real message is about the choicewe make when dealing with other people. We can use our powers for good orlash out at everyone around us.I dare not give away the climax. All I will say is that it features asacrifice absolutely breaktaking and emotionally shattering (albeitsomewhatblunted by the ending). The animation is gorgeous, Michael Kamen’s scoreisperfect, and the film beautifully evokes the 1950s.Sadly, poor marketing kept audiences away in droves. All I can say is, toheck with the box office gross.

There’s not really much to this amuse-bouche of two espionage agents inSweden during World War I. The German agent, the sophisticated andaristocratic Conrad Veidt, and the pouting delicate French agent,Vivien Leigh, are both quite good. I don’t find Conrad Veidtparticularly handsome but he has some properties that seem to appeal towomen — tall, polite, unspeakably rich, unflappable, and speaks with aContinental accent. He wears a monocle too, as if the rest weren’tenough. I don’t find him attractive but I’d like to be him.Vivien Leigh is is a genuine stunner. There isn’t a plane of herfeatures or an angle of the camera that detracts from her beauty. Shecan act too. Here, she changes from curt and business-like to winsomeand yearning, and she does it convincingly. Years later, as BlancheDuBois, she swooped around dressed in frills and slowly going mad inNew Orleans’ French Quarter. As a worn-out Southern belle, she was justas convincing. She had the misfortune of suffering for years from adisabling bipolar disorder and finally the tuberculosis that killedher.The set design is noticeably good, even extravagant in the dining roomscenes. They’re enough to make any normal man’s mouth water — sittingacross from a lovely woman in a fancy restaurant, drinking champagneand dreaming of Aphrodite. Yum.The story itself left me confused. Let’s see. We’re most often inStockholm during the war. There are German spies. There are Frenchspies. There are British spies.

To say that DEVOTION is an accurate representation of the lives ofEmily and Charlotte Bronte is as erroneous as saying that 1939’sWUTHERING HEIGHTS and 1944’s JANE EYRE are flawless filminterpretations of their respective novels. Viewers who seek to learnall they can about the sisters Bronte should look elsewhere. Those whowish to be enveloped in a well-written, well-acted tale of two of thegreats of English literature should tune in whenever possible.Ida Lupino and Olivia de Havilland turn in rich performances as Emilyand Charlotte Bronte. Although much of the history in this film isdistorted, these woman effectively convey the personalities of theactual Bronte women, as evidenced in scholarly research throughout theyears. Charlotte (played by de Havilland) was known for being veryoutspoken, and driven toward making connections in the literary worldand becoming a success. Her view was that life was just a series ofexperiences that provided her with material on which to base her prose.De Havilland conveys a dualistic Bronte, showing both her bold andoutspoken tendencies, as well as her actual naive nature. Charlotte ischallenged by the fact that, although not particularly well-versed inlove and life, she has composed one of the greatest novels the literaryworld has ever known (Jane Eyre). Throughout the movie, we see adefinite transition in Charlotte…the eldest Bronte indeed grows up.

I really enjoyed this movie. No it is not Blueberry the comic book, noteven close. If anyone did adapt Blueberry the comic book morefaithfully, it would be more a straight up western along the lines ofUnforgiven or Deadwood. But this does surely convey Moebius’s moreesoteric side and is kind of an homage to the 70s film El Topo, whichwas directed by Jodorowski… who also collaborated with Moebius on anumber of projects. So in some senses, this film does come full circlein portraying that more occult side of Moebius’s work.As a traditional western, it falls way short. So call it a mysticalwestern and put it in a class of two, with El Topo. It has aninteresting take on psychedelics as entheogens, and worthy ofprotection and theft. There is an interesting contrast between use ofalcohol and tobacco in the recreational sense, compared to smokingmaterial and an ingested intoxicant in the sacramental or shamanisticsense. In this sense, Madsen’s character does get a bit deeper when wefind that it is not gold he is after, but access to the spirit realminstead. One very interesting feature in the movie is not just the useof entheogens, but the scope and range of different sacred plants shownin the movie.So it doesn’t quite make it as a western, but the setting is perfectfor this type of trippy movie. The details are a bit off throughout,but it doesn’t impact the movie all that much.

This movie is a fantastic movie. Everything about it in my opinion wastop notch from the acting to the directing. I know Mr. Garfield wasblacklisted in the 1950’s but the majority of his other films are onvideo if not DVD. That being the case,why isn’t this one? A friendrecorded it off of TCM for me but to have it on DVD would be great. Forspecial features they could have say a Marine historian talk about thebattle and if Mr. Schmid’s wife or son are still alive they could beinterviewed as well. Anyway this is a great movie and I highlyrecommend it.If it ever is put out hopefully it won’t be colorized.Colorizing it would in my opinion just ruin the whole effect of thefilm. The battle scene was quite realistic as far as a 1945,film wouldgo. Mr. Garfield did a superb job of portraying Mr. Schmid. Some actorsmight have been tempted to overact the part of Mr.Schmid’s disabilitybut I feel he got it just right. I sincerely hope they come out withthis movie on DVD someday as a tribute to the courage of Al Schmid andall the other marines who sacrificed so much for us in World War Two.

This film is one of the least known gems to come from producer Dino deLaurentiis. Five women in war-torn Yugoslavia have their heads shavedfor having intimate relations with a German soldier. The five bond andeventually join the partisan group who punished them back in theirvillage. The film documents their fight against the enemy of theirhomeland, and their internal feelings of remorse, love, and hate. Thewomen all give stellar performances–Silvana Mangano, Barbara BelGeddes, Vera Miles, Jeanne Moreau, and young Carla Gravina. Van Heflinand Harry Guardino also deliver fine performances, as the leader of theYugoslav partisan group and the troublemaker of the partisans,respectively. But perhaps the most touching performance comes fromRichard Basehart as the German Captain Erich Reinhardt. In the littlescreen time he has, Mr. Basehart delivers a gem, bringing poignantly tolife a gentle widower, plucked from his comfortable life as auniversity professor to fight in the war. He is captured by thepartisans, and bonds with the 5 Branded Women who have been acceptedinto their group. He had shown sympathy for the women in the beginningof the film after their disgrace was made public, and in captivity, hebonds with them, particularly Mira (Carla Gravina),(whose baby hedelivers) and Ljuba (Jeanne Moreau),(who finds herself in danger offalling for him).
