Now, you see, back when I was about 16 (a mere 5 years younger than MrCusack), my friend introduced me to ‘The Sure Thing’; saying how it wasa funny teen film and I was sure to like it. Well, that was anunderstatement, because I hired this soooo many times from the videostore-the owner (yes, I know, it’s illegal) even offered to record itonto a blank tape for me to keep!!John Cusack’s superb characterisation of ‘Gib’ is so caring, sohilarious and so off the cuff, it is perfect in every way, DaphneZuniga is the perfect prim & proper student, who eventually melts intonormality and hey, even though the part is small, ‘Anthony Edwards’ isalways great. lets face it. This film just shows off all the facets ofJohn Cusacks acting ability for all to see and it is a real pleasure tohave ‘found’ him so long ago & I am proud, yes, proud to see his careermaterialise into something so great; that he is getting some reallygreat parts, is producing etc too…well done John!! I am no great filmbuff as such, but am always glad when this actor appears in new films,he’s what todays film industry needs and is all about ! MGM has a lot to answer for. A great deal of time, money, and marveloustalent went into “Mark of the Vampire,” only to find 15 minutes (that’s20 percent) of it left on the cutting room floor. Releasing a scant60-minute movie, the studio reportedly cut the comic relief and alsovery obviously cut material crucial to continuity and consistency. The plot is left so full of holes that I doubt I could have followedthe action if it hadn’t been for the number of familiar actors, alldoing fine work here: the Lionels Barrymore and Atwill, Gene Hersholt,Donald Meek, and especially Bela Lugosi, who is given only onedelicious line, absolutely worth the wait. Even more impressive than the cast is Todd Browning’s direction (what’sleft of it), Cedric Gibbons’ classic sets (ditto), and the gorgeouschiaroscuro photography and fluid camera-work of James Wong Howe (andditto).Whether or not you approve of it, the surprise ending is a botch job.The movie plays like a straight vampire movie— disastrously edited, butcaptivating all the same. Then comes the last 10 minutes. You feelcheated, and not just because the movie abruptly transmogrifies into avampire-free murder mystery: The action was all elaborately staged toentrap a murderer by a detective, a professor, a girl, a butler, actorsplaying vampires, and a menagerie of real bats, rodents, and what Ithink was a huge scorpion. The real problem is those inconsistencies.

I don’t believe that you can make a bad film of a Jules Verne story.Some better than others, some inferior ones, but not a bad film. Theplots and the characters were born for the screen. If Verne had beenborn later and allowed full credit control in writing and producingfilms, what films they would have been.Mysterious Island with the help of that other creative genius RayHarryhausen concerns some Union soldiers who escape from a Confederateprison in a Confederate observation balloon. There’s also oneConfederate stowaway as well. In what is described as the greatest storm in American history thisballoon is blown WAAAAAAAAAAAAY off course and they land on an islandthey later learn is 1000 miles from New Zealand. And what a place withall kinds of giant creatures, crabs, bees, and even a giant chicken allbrought to life by Ray Harryhausen with some of his best work.The man responsible for all this is Captain Nemo late of the Nautiluswhich it turns out was not sunk as written by Verne in 20000 LeaguesUnder The Sea, but rather limped into its home base by Herbert Lom in ameasured and calculated performance. B.R. Chopra’s Insaaf Ka Tarazu is a gripping, thrilling and brutallyhonest story of rape and injustice. Chopra’s direction is great, andthe script is very well written and disturbingly real in its depictionof the subject matter, an issue which has always been a taboo in aconservative society like that of India but which is also inevitablyrelevant. Zeenat Aman plays Bharti, a young hot model who lives withher young sister, a schoolgirl named Neeta, in Bombay. Bharti getsraped by one of her die-hard fans, namely Mahesh. Bharti seeks justicein court but fails to prove his guilt given the lack of evidences, andhe is exonerated. A frustrated and deeply hurt Bharti loses her job,separates from her fiancГ©e Ashok and finds a new job as a typist inPune. Two years pass by, Bharti’s sister is now a more grown girl whogoes for a job interview as a secretary, where the manager is noneother than Mahesh. And history repeats itself.Insaaf Ka Tarazu is poignantly unsettling and the courtroom scenes areeffective. Chopra portrays the rape scenes in an incredibly realisticway, all the more so for those times. If the first scene shocks youwith its authentic brutality, the second one will leave you wordlesslydisturbed. It is sad to know how helpless a woman can be and even moresad that no one can come to her rescue.

This 80s classic featured three great actors of Indian Cinema,AmitabhBachchan,Kamal Hassan and Rajnikant.Kamal Hassan is the leading star.Kamal is great in his role and carriesthe comedy and seriousness really well when it is needed.Amitabh Bachchan is the second most important actor in themovie.Although he was supposed to have a special appearance but hisrole was increased.He is good too but repeats his angry young man roleagain.Rajnikant is in a special appearance and steals the show and his deathscene is heart breaking and he does his same stuff with the cigarette.Kader Khan is funny as the villain.Shakti Kapoor as Kader Khan’s son is the funniest of all as the totla.Lovely movie.

20 years ago, I remember how one of my relatives was tellingenthusiastically the story of Indian movie she saw. I recall her strongemotion especially when it came to matters like the name of god beingwritten accidentally on the dead mother’s forehead, or the collectivebloody vengeance on the bad guys at the end. So I believed very earlythat Geraftaar (or Arrest in English) is one effective, exciting andvenerable film. However when I got to watch it, I discovered theopposite.Nearly nothing is serious here except (Amitabh Bachchan) ! It’s thesame themes of the commercial Indian cinema at the time : the oldlost-and-found, taming-of-the-shrew, frame-the-honest-man,get-the-revenge-story.. (you know) BUT in a comic or cheesy way most ofthe time this round !.

Holmes had received a letter from Lady Penrose asking for his assistance as she feared for her life. It was too late however as she had already been killed by the time he received it. Her throat was torn out and the local villagers are spreading rumors about monsters and evil spirits as being the cause. Holmes doesn’t believe any of that and sets out to find the killer. He believes that Lady Penrose’s past as an actress may have something to with her death. As others in the village are attacked, Holmes believes the killer is among them, impersonating a local villager as he goes about his business.

Atmospheric, well-cast and much different from its brethren, The ScarletClaw looks and feels more like a classic late Universal horror film thananyof the other Holmes movies. Spoilers follow.The concept of a murder mystery where the killer turns out to be one personbehind many faces is always entertaining and it is well-done here. Thisfilm is interesting too because, more than any other Holmes film I know inany series, Holmes fails repeatedly — to stop the killer and even toapprehend him at the end. It is far different in that respect from thetraditional Holmes tale, where Holmes is always at least one step ahead ofhis adversary. Finally, the years have lent the story a touch ofunintended, grim humor. One of the elements the story uses to divertsuspicion away from the killer’s main identity is the idea that no onewouldever suspect a postman of violent crime. Times change.

When life sucks you become weary with trying to make the best ofthings. It so happens, I was in that very situation when I rented KyaKool Hai Hum. A friend said it’s a movie that will make me laugh andfeel better. Well, she was right: I howled with laughter! KKHH isfunny, sick, dirty, crazy… Tushar and Riteish are a great pair andreminded me of other classic comic pairs such as Salman-Aamir (AndazApna Apna) and Ajay-Aamir (Ishq). This movie comes with fantastictwists and turns and just makes you feel sorry for the characters forhaving such bad luck… Isha K. does an excellent job in portraying afeminist cop (especially when she wants to blow T’s brain off in thebeginning). Neha D. does a good job as well. Anupam Kher made me laughjust as hard as the other two and so does his co-actor. Being a psychmajor in university, I can safely say, we’re not all like that…lol.Raj Yadav delivers his classic comic style and adds to the grand themewell. All in all, this movie is a good watch (not suitable to watchwith slightly stringent parents…

What About movie – The cynical and skeptical writer Mike Enslin writes books evaluating supernatural phenomena in hotels, graveyards and other haunted places, usually debunking the mystery. While writing his latest book, he travels from Los Angeles to New York to spend one night in the Dolphin Hotel’s evil room 1408, which is permanently unavailable for guests. The reluctant manager Mr. Gerald Olin objects to his request and offers an upgrade, expensive booze and finally relates the death of more than fifty guests over decades in the cursed room. However Mike threatens Mr. Olin, promising to sue the hotel, and is finally allowed to check into the room. Later in the night, he finds that guests of room 1408, once they have checked in, might never leave the room alive.

Please note that this review refers to the theatrical version, and notthe Director’s Cut DVD release which features a completely differentending.Mike Enslin is a cynic. He is the author of books that detail anddebunk popular ghost stories and haunted hot-spots, and it quicklybecomes obvious that he is somewhat disenchanted with the life that heleads. That is, of course, until he receives an invitation to Room 1408at the Dolphin Hotel, a room in which lies his and arguably JohnCusack’s biggest challenge yet.It soon becomes apparent that 1408 is not your standard horror movie,as what follows, after an enjoyably creepy encounter with hotel managerGerald Olin (Samuel L Jackson), is essentially 90 minutes of JohnCusack in a room. On his own. Save for, of course, whatever lurksinside 1408. It is a challenge that Cusack rises to expertly; we allknow he’s a good actor and a brilliant everyman (I don’t remember afilm in which I’ve wanted to see him crash and burn), but 1408 allowshim to display his range to great effect as the room confronts him withthe physical dangers of the present and the emotional tragedies of hispast. While it’s relatively light on big scares, 1408 instead creates apowerful sense of unease that combines wonderfully with Cusack’sportrayal of a man enduring his own private hell.

When World War II breaks out, one working class family (The Crowson’s)find themselves playing their part in the war effort. Dad joins the wareffort, elder daughter Celia signs up to serve and youngest daughterElsie is to work in a factory. While the two daughters try to fit inwhere they are placed, it is Elsie that takes to the working classlabour better, even thought some of her colleagues from the upperclasses don’t fit in as well. Meanwhile, back at home, Dad finds thebattle against dishes and housework to be even more of a challenge thanthe battle against the Hun.Although it is clearly a propaganda film in essence, this wartime dramais quite interesting for not being as simplistic as some of its peers.In this family drama we don’t really have a message pushed that hardbut are instead left to draw out own warmth from a narrative that has asurprising amount about class within it. In this regard it does producesome interesting threads although those looking back for sharp commentwill not find it because this is still a melodrama with a propagandaedge. As such it is a bit plodding at times but I still quite enjoyedit for what it was although I can understand why some viewers havefound it a bit dull and lacking in sharpness.The cast are pretty good with the material. Roc and Dunn give good ifunspectacular turns as the daughters while Marriott provides a workingclass comic relief to proceedings as the father.

What About movie – The truthful soldier Stirling didn’t know how to lie about his source of information, the talking army Mule, Francis, so he was treated as a lunatic and led to one after another hilarious situations, where the mule was the only one that appeared in his right mind. In the process of all this, the mule assisted in uncovering a spy, Mareen, who pretended to be lost among the jungles, but was actually… This is a perfect family film, even amusing to the adults. If people all have enough sense as this talking mule does, the world will be a much better place than its present condition.
