I don’t believe that you can make a bad film of a Jules Verne story.Some better than others, some inferior ones, but not a bad film. Theplots and the characters were born for the screen. If Verne had beenborn later and allowed full credit control in writing and producingfilms, what films they would have been.Mysterious Island with the help of that other creative genius RayHarryhausen concerns some Union soldiers who escape from a Confederateprison in a Confederate observation balloon. There’s also oneConfederate stowaway as well. In what is described as the greatest storm in American history thisballoon is blown WAAAAAAAAAAAAY off course and they land on an islandthey later learn is 1000 miles from New Zealand. And what a place withall kinds of giant creatures, crabs, bees, and even a giant chicken allbrought to life by Ray Harryhausen with some of his best work.The man responsible for all this is Captain Nemo late of the Nautiluswhich it turns out was not sunk as written by Verne in 20000 LeaguesUnder The Sea, but rather limped into its home base by Herbert Lom in ameasured and calculated performance. I just purchased the DVD of Pal Joey and the picture and colors arebreathtaking. It is wonderful to see the scope of 1957 Frisco in digitalWidescreen. I will say that those expecting a full, true musical, might bedissappointed. It is a lighthearted movie that contains songs. AND WHATSONGS THEY ARE. The Rogers and Hart songs never sounded better and it isalways a treat to SEE Sinatra perform them, especially here in 1957 when hewas at the peak of his artistry. The look and feel of the movie is quitemodern, and although tame in comparison to modern films, the script is coyand sexy. It is lighthearted fun and entertainment and all do a fine job intheir roles. (Sinatra won a Golden Globe for best actor) . One could onlyhope that they hurry and remaster the rest of the Sinatra catalog on DVD. Next should be “Hole in the Head”. I welcome any and all comments…emailme!!

It took 17 years for the play PAL JOEY to reach the screen, and eventhoughthis ‘Joey’ is watered-down, the film is still thirst-quenchingto first time viewers. The differences between play and film havebeenexaggerated. San Francisco (film) and Chicago (play) are related.Whatdoes grate on people who “know the score”,in both senses, is the lossofhalf the stage songs to background music. They are wonderful and I can-notsee why Frank Sinatra wouldn’t have begged to sing them. I thinkthat Rita Hayworth, sadly aging (at 39 she looked 49), is extremelyunderrated as ‘Vera’.

AHAT is a dream movie. Director Mansoor Khan was in full form and hegifted us a movie of lifetime. Though the movie was inspired fromHollywood flick “Kramer vs kramer” it had its own way of conveyingthought.Watching Aamir and Manisha is a treat for every cine-goers.Theyoung artist did reasonably well. Aamir effectively delineated thesituation of an estranged father.He looked quite dashing too.Manishatoo conveyed every thought through her eyes.Performancewise the movieis first rate.Music is outstanding. especially “raja ko rani se”,”aisajakham kiya hai”can be picked out of the lot.On the whole AHAT is a aptexample of good cinema.A must watch.

I had really high expectations and they weren’t fulfilled. But I wasn’tdisappointed either.Yes, it could be better. This interesting theme could be great materialfor psychological drama. I generally dislike action and zombie movies,but this one was nice mix 33% action + 33% black comedy +33% romance.Everything was moderate but not in a bad sense of that word. Acting wasgood and it was nice to see Mr Bettany in superhero role (if you cansay so for an angel role:) Characters were well written (could bebetter and deeper, but it’s enough). Not much suspense, but interestingenough.

I’m in Italy, the pope just died this weekend (April 2005) so ItalianTV showed ‘From A Far Country’ late last night. I’m not remotelyinterested in the pope, and I’m not Italian, so I couldn’t understandthe dubbing, but I nevertheless stayed riveted to this movie because ofthe stunning cinematography and subtle special effects that gave theimages such an extraordinarily documentarily accurate and overwhelmingsense of period time and place. From the apparent ages of the principalactors (Sam Neill, Chris Cazenove etc) I was able to guess that themovie was made in the early eighties, though the clever period look ofthe film and its imaging effects suggested 21st century digitalprocesses, so it was a real puzzle to me who had made it, perhaps someclassy 80’s director like Hugh Hudson, with a 2005 makeover from ILM,or perhaps the guy who shot Schindler’s List, or even Edgar Reitz. Butno, turns out it was all the work of some Polish director I’d neverheard of. Bravo Krzysztof Zanussi! Anyone interested in making period,historical movies of ostensibly dry subjects should definitely takenotes from this guy. Even the back-projected Vatican crowd sequenceabout halfway through, although looking obviously fake, is neverthelessso well done that one suspends not only disbelief, but also criticism.

Director MIchel Drach tells here his own story,when he was a childduring WW2.The film is a long flashback;Trintignant plays a director(actually Drach)who wants to transfer a screenplay -see above- to thescreen.If my memory serves me,cause it’s been a long time since Iwatched this flick for the last time,present scenes are shot in blackand white whereas past sequences are in color.Drach remembers.It was WW2,and Jews were arrested .His mother (playedby Drach’s then wife Marie-JosГ© Nat)had to escape from France and itwas not an easy thing to do ,because of her compatriots ‘ greed.There’sa wonderful part of a grand-mother ,marvelously played by GabrielleDoulcet who tries to explain to her grandson the absurdity of theanti-Semitism.Nat won the best actress prize at the festival de Cannes1974. Should appeal to people who like films like ” Au nom de tous lesmiens” (story of Martin Gray ,directed by Robert Enrico),”un sac debilles” and of course “the diary of Anne Frank”.

Arang is a reasonably good story that tries to tie in the policeinvestigation type drama into an essentially horror movie. In thisattempt, it has some originality, and i applaud that. Also the idea ofinvolving both the two cops investigating these murder in the originalsituation that led to the series of revenge murders is quiteinteresting. However i would have liked to see more of theinvestigation side of the drama rather than the horror side. There isfar too many graphic images of the same ghosts that just keep comingback again and again and i feel it doesn’t add anything to the storybut to scare the audience. The movie is very ambiguous as to how thevictims did actually die, whether it’s supernatural or cases ofpoisoning. I find myself baffled many times how different things relateto each other, and i feel that again the director tries to confuse theaudience deliberately to add to the suspense or scariness of the movie.It kind of put me off because the story seems less convincing becauseof all the unexplained elements. In summary, if you like horror, it’s amovie that’s worth having a watch if you’ve got the time. Nothinggroundbreaking, and for me it’s plainly too much blood and gore withoutthe necessity for it.

What About movie – After the corrupt former Mayor is killed by the peasants, poor janitor Juan Vargas is appointed new Mayor of a desert town in central Mexico. Although he tries to bring the motto of the ruling party to town (modernity, peace and progress) he realizes soon that there’s nothing to do against corruption… except to become corrupt. Step by step, helped by his pistol, Juan Vargas becomes the law and the worst Major in the town’s history.

Warsaw, December 1942. When a prostitute is savagely murdered, GermanIntelligence Officer Major Grau is called to investigate. An eyewitnesswho caught a glimpse of the perpetrator through a crack in a door,reveals that the killer wore grey trousers with a red stripe down theside – the uniform of a Wehrmact General. Grau quickly narrows thesuspects down to three men whose whereabouts on the night in questioncannot be accounted for.Having been aware of this film for many years, I finally managed tocatch a rare screening of it last night on British TV. Part of mycuriosity to see it was due to the sheer weight of the cast:- OmarSharif as Major Grau, Peter O’Toole, Donald Pleasence and Charles Grayas the Generals, plus Christopher Plummer, Tom Courtenay, PhilipNoiret, Gordon Jackson, John Gregson, Harry Andrews, Nigel Stock andPatrick Allen – phew! The film itself starts quite promisingly as amurder mystery and maintains the interest while based in Warsaw. Itfeatures an impressive sequence involving the flushing out of PolishResistance fighters in the city. An interesting side-note at this pointis that the armour used here appeared to be either real Tiger tanks, orpretty good replicas. This attention to detail was quite unusual for afilm made in 1966. Usually, contemporary armour was used in war filmsof this vintage – I’m thinking particularly of ‘Battle Of The Bulge’,’The Bridge At Remagen’ and even ‘Patton’.

What About movie – Wealthy Mary Haines is unaware her husband is having an affair with shopgirl Crystal Allen. Sylvia Fowler and Edith Potter discover this from a manicurist and arrange for Mary to hear the gossip. On the train taking her to a Reno divorce Mary meets the Countess and Miriam (in an affair with Fowler’s husband). While they are at Lucy’s dude ranch, Fowler arrives for her own divorce and the Countess meets fifth husband-to-be Buck. Back in New York, Mary’s ex is now unhappily married to Crystal who is already in an affair with Buck. When Sylvia lets this story slip at a country club dinner, Crystal brags of her plans for a still wealthier marriage, only to find the Countess is the source of all Buck’s money. Crystal must return to the perfume counter and Mary runs back to her husband.

_movie.asp?movieid=1520We saw this yesterday at Cinema Village. Very powerful!! From theopening scene throughout, I was captured by the suspense and theemotion…and my mind was turning! Roland Tec does not tell you what tothink nor put every detail together, rather creates powerful and movingvignettes that open one’s heart and come more alive and present throughinteraction with one’s own thoughts. The stories-and film as awhole-interact with the viewer. Each person comes away with a slightlyvaried impression, and richer from the experience! Each of the 13 vignettes is full on its own. However, the arrangementof them is done in a way that echoes certain threads and increasesdrama and potency. There is even comic relief that can only come fromseeing the realness of human character placed in the preposterousnessthat is often life.I am impressed by many elements of this film. The understanding ofhuman nature and unbalances of our society are portrayed in distinctways and suggest keen insight and awareness throughout the making of WePedal Uphill. The symbolism and multiple levels of expression of thisfilm through the characters, the settings and the music are stillresonating in my soul.I particularly appreciated how the intricacies of racism wereportrayed. Racism is often fueled by how one expects another of acertain culture, skin color, or background to be. In the singer’s storyI felt her pain at each step. Seemingly little acts have huge affect.
