MGM has a lot to answer for. A great deal of time, money, and marveloustalent went into “Mark of the Vampire,” only to find 15 minutes (that’s20 percent) of it left on the cutting room floor. Releasing a scant60-minute movie, the studio reportedly cut the comic relief and alsovery obviously cut material crucial to continuity and consistency. The plot is left so full of holes that I doubt I could have followedthe action if it hadn’t been for the number of familiar actors, alldoing fine work here: the Lionels Barrymore and Atwill, Gene Hersholt,Donald Meek, and especially Bela Lugosi, who is given only onedelicious line, absolutely worth the wait. Even more impressive than the cast is Todd Browning’s direction (what’sleft of it), Cedric Gibbons’ classic sets (ditto), and the gorgeouschiaroscuro photography and fluid camera-work of James Wong Howe (andditto).Whether or not you approve of it, the surprise ending is a botch job.The movie plays like a straight vampire movie— disastrously edited, butcaptivating all the same. Then comes the last 10 minutes. You feelcheated, and not just because the movie abruptly transmogrifies into avampire-free murder mystery: The action was all elaborately staged toentrap a murderer by a detective, a professor, a girl, a butler, actorsplaying vampires, and a menagerie of real bats, rodents, and what Ithink was a huge scorpion. The real problem is those inconsistencies.

Went and saw the premiere with my kids (both under 7) this week. Theythought it was great, and although the run time was a little short for mytastes, it worked out great for their attention spans. My little oneseemeda little bored during some of the slower portions.The film was visually very appealing, the landscape was terrific. Thefaraway shots of the desert were really stunning as well as the race footage.You could almost feel the sand being kicked up during the race scenes.IMAXwas a great format to see this in and my kids were in awe of the size ofthescreen.That being said, the acting was a bit strained but hey 2 of the 3 maincharacters were kids and the other was the horse. And while it may be nitpicking, how does a 12 year-old girl start a fire all by herself with notools or supplies?Anyway, overall a fun experience to take your kids to.

This film demonstrates an excellent use of both dialog andcinematography to evoke a mysterious, yet stark atmosphere. Redgrave isespecially excellent in her portrayal of a character that defies easydescription or explanation. The score, too, works to create a specificplace, but never falls to the easy trap of using simple folk-musicstyles in order to provide a sonic backdrop.Overall, The Ballad of the Sad Cafe is a haunting and beautifulexploration of human emotions and inhuman behaviors. I would highlyrecommend this film to everyone interested in an eerie combination ofthe real and surreal.

The Collection (2012)** (out of 4) Arkin (Josh Stewart), the survivor from THE COLLECTOR, is forced intothe warehouse of the killer by a group of professional hunters so thatthey can rescue a girl (Emma Fitzpatrick) who has been kidnapped. Thegroup soon find themselves in a deadly game that has them entertainingone rigged room after another. THE COLLECTION is a sequel to the 2009film that I’m not sure anyone was really asking for. I thought THECOLLECTOR was an entertaining, if flawed, movie that managed to have afew good things going for it. THE COLLECTION is certainly very flawedand has a bit of “been there, done that” but at the same time it’sstill a little better than most of the horror films from this year. Asusual, director Marcus Dunstan offers viewers plenty of violence andgore. If you’re wanting a gore feast then this here will certainly keepyou happy as bodies are ripped to shreds in a variety of ways includinga rather clever way to start the picture. I’m not going to give awaywhat happens in the club but it was pretty wild and certainlymemorable. I also think that the two lead characters are pretty goodand they at least make you like them and want to see them work theirway through this deadly maze. Both Stewart and Fitzpatrick offer upfine performances and help keep the film moving. The biggest problemwith the film is that there’s zero tension.

20 years ago, I remember how one of my relatives was tellingenthusiastically the story of Indian movie she saw. I recall her strongemotion especially when it came to matters like the name of god beingwritten accidentally on the dead mother’s forehead, or the collectivebloody vengeance on the bad guys at the end. So I believed very earlythat Geraftaar (or Arrest in English) is one effective, exciting andvenerable film. However when I got to watch it, I discovered theopposite.Nearly nothing is serious here except (Amitabh Bachchan) ! It’s thesame themes of the commercial Indian cinema at the time : the oldlost-and-found, taming-of-the-shrew, frame-the-honest-man,get-the-revenge-story.. (you know) BUT in a comic or cheesy way most ofthe time this round !.

I dunno what it is about this movie, but it is so addictive. The firsttimei watched it it scared the mess outta me! But I really liked it andwatchedit over and over. Even though I was born a couple of decades after this movie wasreleased, I wanted to watch it when it played on TV because it wasgiven a perfect 5/5 rating by my local newspaper’s TV listings. When Ituned in, I was even more excited when I found out that it was a DavidWolper and Mel Stuart collaboration because I really loved ‘Willy Wonkaand the Chocolate Factory.’ It’s a shame that ‘If It’s Tuesday ThisMust Be Belgium’ is not available on DVD. Even though it was made about30 years ago, the misadventures of the ensemble cast are as funny asever. The fine balance between the witty humor and acerbic banter inthis movie is something that is rare in movies today. The only moviesthat come close are a few of Wes Anderson’s (Rushmore, RoyalTenenbaums, The Life Aquatic), but instead of being faux retro, ‘IfIt’s Tuesday This Must Be Belgium’ really is retro. It shows all ofEurope’s fabled landmarks in the tongue-and-cheek manner that you can’tget from any movie unless it really was made in 1969. I liked the partwhen the group was at a cheese market in Amsterdam and the tour guidesays, “There’s an auction of gouda cheeses and edam cheeses. And prettygood-a edam cheeses they are.” That is like so corny it’s funny. Afterwatching this movie, I actually did want to take a European bus tour!But the best thing about this movie is its great cast, particularly thebeautiful Suzanne Pleshette and the devilishly handsome Ian McShane.

What About movie – While attending a conference in Quebec City, Sherlock Holmes and his good friend Dr. Watson are drawn into a murder investigation in the nearby village of La Mort Rouge. Holmes had received a letter from Lady Penrose asking for his assistance as she feared for her life. It was too late however as she had already been killed by the time he received it. Her throat was torn out and the local villagers are spreading rumors about monsters and evil spirits as being the cause. Holmes doesn’t believe any of that and sets out to find the killer. He believes that Lady Penrose’s past as an actress may have something to with her death. As others in the village are attacked, Holmes believes the killer is among them, impersonating a local villager as he goes about his business.

Atmospheric, well-cast and much different from its brethren, The ScarletClaw looks and feels more like a classic late Universal horror film thananyof the other Holmes movies. Spoilers follow.The concept of a murder mystery where the killer turns out to be one personbehind many faces is always entertaining and it is well-done here. Thisfilm is interesting too because, more than any other Holmes film I know inany series, Holmes fails repeatedly — to stop the killer and even toapprehend him at the end. It is far different in that respect from thetraditional Holmes tale, where Holmes is always at least one step ahead ofhis adversary. Finally, the years have lent the story a touch ofunintended, grim humor. One of the elements the story uses to divertsuspicion away from the killer’s main identity is the idea that no onewouldever suspect a postman of violent crime. Times change.

Buster (Phil Collins) is a petty thief with some skill. If he wants anew suit, he just breaks a store window and makes off with a mannequin.If the baby needs supplies, Buster sneaks into the chemist’s at nightand picks out what is needed. His wife June is getting a bit tired ofthis and would love to have a place of their own, not a rental.Therefore, Buster arranges a major train robbery (THE Great TrainRobbery in the early sixties). The plot is almost successful but Busterdoes not remain anonymous and is a hunted man, post robbery. Will heever see his family again? This is a very likable movie about anunlikely charmer. Buster does not want an honest job to support hisfamily but one just can not help liking the guy. Collins is quite goodas this amusing thief. Julie Walters, as his wife, is also sweet andattractive. The plot is amazing when one realizes these events actuallytook place. Part love story, part cat and mouse game, this film is afun view. Anyone who sits down to Buster will be laughing in shortorder, leaving the sometimes somber world behind.
