It has all the trappings of an entertaining musical, but the chemistryis not there. A few of the musical numbers are worth seeing, but manyare mediocre at best. The most peculiar thing about the movie is itssubstitution of boring, pedestrian new songs to take the place of ColePorter’s songs. Although Jimmy Van Heusen certainly composed some goodsongs in his day, the present “Ya Gotta Give the People Hoke,” “BounceRight Back,” and “A Second-Hand Turban” are embarrassing. The producerscouldn’t find 3 more Cole Porter songs to use instead? Adding to theembarrassment is the bowdlerization of the song “Anything Goes,” inwhich Mitzi Gayner is not even permitted to refer to authors'”four-letter words.” Instead, we are nonsensically told that authorsnowadays use only “three-letter words.” Of course, such censoring ofthe lyrics of this song negate the entire premise of the song, which isthat anything is permitted nowadays.Donald O’Connor has a very nice dance routine with children and a lotof bouncing balls in “Bounce Right Back,” which is the most originalnumber in the film. The comedy duos by O’Connor and Crosby fall flat,as does the vocal by Jeanmaire. Indeed, after hearing the mangledarrangement of her trying to sing “I Get a Kick Out of You,” I actuallystopped the movie and played a Frank Sinatra version in order to getthe bad taste out of my ears. Mitzi Gayner is lively and attractive anddoes a good job in belting out her songs.

What About movie – Seth Brundle, a brilliant but eccentric scientist attempts to woo investigative journalist Veronica Quaife by offering her a scoop on his latest research in the field of matter transportation, which against all the expectations of the scientific establishment have proved successful. Up to a point. Brundle thinks he has ironed out the last problem when he successfully transports a living creature, but when he attempts to teleport himself a fly enters one of the transmission booths, and Brundle finds he is a changed man. This Science-Gone-Mad film is the source of the quotable quote Be afraid. Be very afraid.”

I have seen this film quite a few times and still cry at the ending.David Cronenberg is a genius and my favourite director, a master of thegenre. This film shows male hysteria, some black comedy (some briefscenes, one of them involving a baboon) and true love. Of course, theending is heartbreaking and I think it can effect on people in reallife. It is disturbing, but if you’re like me then you’ll see beyondthat and see the beauty and sorrow of this film. I know that Crash ismarvellous to audiences, but in my opinion, how this film shockedviewers in ways and made them think as well; it is undoubtedly DavidCronenberg’s masterpiece.

Of the more than one thousand productions I have seen during mylifetime, this is definitely among the top three.It is strong in almost every respect, from its cinematography to itsbackground music.To me, its highest appeal is its unqualified universality of emotion.How many of us have not had a parent step in at some supremelyinopportune moment and ruin something valuable in our lives? How manyof us have not been hated by someone who sees the world differently?How many of us have not instantly fallen in love? It is almostirrelevant that the production is set in the gay section of Vancouveror that the main characters focus on same sex love. It is emotionscommon to everyone that give the production its extreme appeal. I wascheering the girls, and would have been very hurt if they had notgotten back together again.I might add that this is the only DVD I have seen in which I enjoyedthe director’s comments as much as the production itself.Both of the young actresses displayed an amazing variety of facialexpressions. The shot focusing on Cox’s deep blue eyes while Karyn isunable to confront her mother with the truth is priceless, as is Cox’sgesture half hiding her face and half saying “so what” as she flees theapplauding crowd after the bathroom scene.The film’s only weakness, in my opinion, is that everybody foundsomeone in the end, at least at the very same instant. Life is simplynot that generous.

ALICE is the kind of movie they made in the 30’s and 40’s. Never attemptsto be an “event”. Just wants to entertain. And it does. I was surprisedby Kiefer Sutherland. In a role that could be a cliche, he made it real.The plot does make allusions to ALICE IN WONDERLAND. A guy dressed in whitedoes go through a hole and Kiefer does fall down one. Like ALICE the plotdoes twist and turn, but with a freshness you don’t see in small movies. Iloved the direction, Sutherland, just a very fast paced and interestingmovie.

Buster (Phil Collins) is a petty thief with some skill. If he wants anew suit, he just breaks a store window and makes off with a mannequin.If the baby needs supplies, Buster sneaks into the chemist’s at nightand picks out what is needed. His wife June is getting a bit tired ofthis and would love to have a place of their own, not a rental.Therefore, Buster arranges a major train robbery (THE Great TrainRobbery in the early sixties). The plot is almost successful but Busterdoes not remain anonymous and is a hunted man, post robbery. Will heever see his family again? This is a very likable movie about anunlikely charmer. Buster does not want an honest job to support hisfamily but one just can not help liking the guy. Collins is quite goodas this amusing thief. Julie Walters, as his wife, is also sweet andattractive. The plot is amazing when one realizes these events actuallytook place. Part love story, part cat and mouse game, this film is afun view. Anyone who sits down to Buster will be laughing in shortorder, leaving the sometimes somber world behind.

ON THE TOWN is the splashy 1949 film adaptation of the LeonardBernstein Broadway musical, which has now been tailored to fit the MGMstable of stars. Co-directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, this filmmade history as the first musical to actually do some filming onlocation in Manhattan. The story is simple: three sailors (Kelly, FrankSinatra, and Jules Munshin) have a 24-hour leave in New York and arelooking for romance. Betty Garrett plays a female cabbie who has thehots for Sinatra and Munshin falls for an anthropology student playedby Ann Miller. Kelly sees a poster in the subway for this month’s “MissTurnstiles” (Vera-Ellen) and decides to spend the whole day looking forher. This thin plot allows room for some memorable musical numbersincluding the classic, “New York, New York”, Miller’s memorable “FindMe a Primitive Man” and a fun duet with Sinatra and Garrett called”Come up to My Place”. Actually “My Place” and “New York” are the onlysongs from the original Broadway show, but why carp? It’s a musicalclassic that is a delight from start to finish.

With all due repect to the user who somehow remembers the ancient Republicserials doing a better live action/effects mix that this high-tech Sixtiesextravaganza, you really won’t see the join in Medding’s seamlessrecreationof a British motorway (built in one third scale and mixed with realmotorwayshots for the climactic Tigermoth escape sequence). Indeed, so realisticisthis shot that on the DVD commentary Sylvia Anderson (who spends most ofhertime pointing out the live action shots vs the model shots, like we reallyneed to know) exclaimes “now that’s definitely not a model shot!”. SorrySylv, love, it is and it’s quite likely the best you’ll ever see (or behoodwinked by). If you love Thunderbirds, the Andersons or just damn fineeffect work, come worship at the alter of Derek Meddings: see ThunderbirdSix.

Thunderbirds had made a major impact in British TV, leading to the 1966theatrical release Thunderbirds Are Go, but disappointing box office returnsand lack of interest from major US networks (the show was syndicated in theUS instead of picked up by one of the three big broadcasters) causedcancellation of the series. Despite this, one more theatrical film wasprepared, and the resulting film has proven to be a highlight of theThunderbirds epic despite once again suffering from disappointing box officereturns.

At one point in Les Morfalous, Jean-Paul Belmondo’s character tells thewarrant officer: “I’ll be frank, Edouard. It’s not polite to mock us.”Pause. “It’s not polite.” Although this war story seems often to be abargain basement version of Kelly’s Heroes, it has its moments. Anothermoment comes when the bank director’s wife, observing her husband forthe last time, gets a chance to make one really mean comment that is aplay on words. Those moments do not include the cheap explosions thatdo no damage to the Tunisian town set where most of the action takesplace in. Les Morfalous is the last of seven (by my count inIMDb)pairings of Belmondo and director Henri Verneuil. Belmondo in thismovie seems as spry as ever, fighting, running and chewing the scenery.But age was catching up to him, which shows in close ups. Verneuil, agreat action director, decided to end his career, after this movie, bymaking a series of dramatic movies about the Turkish genocide of theArmenians during World War One. I think he made the right decision, byending his career making movies he cared about. Les Morfalous is a starvehicle that lacks the usual production gloss of Belmondo’s movies inthe 60s and 70s. The version I saw on the NYC CUNY Channel hadsubtitles but the print was grainy and washed out. Even a great printcould not hide this movie’s flaws: cheap action, choppy editing and toomany dull characters.

My two brothers and I used to pretend that we were Crash, Dusty, andAlibi, running through the back yard with cap guns blazing. I onlyremember seeing three of the 24 films that they starred in, but of thethree, the most memorable was Tumbledown Ranch. This film evoked theearliest vestage of time travel, with the trio assuming a modern daypersonage of their “Range Buster” ancestors. After vanquishing the evildoers, they all awaken under a tree, back in their own time. Althoughtheir films would appear “corny” by today’s standards, for my brothersand I they provided just the role models we needed growing up in thefifties.

Iron Man is the first feature to be made entirely by Marvel – a gamblewhich has paid off to the tune of over $350 million worldwide so far.For a non-sequel from a fledgling company that is impressive and bodeswell for Marvel’s reboot of The Incredible Hulk – due in June. Comicbook films are big money spinners now but the success of a new seriesis predicated on the entertainment value of the central character – andin this way Hulk and Tony Stark have similar problems. They just aren’tsuper enough…Iron Man starts with an unnecessary flashback structure, presumably toensure some loud action in the first minute or two. Tony Stark (playedwith now-familiar post-rehab gusto by Robert Downey Jnr.) is theembodiment of the capitalistic, jingoistic American ideal. He hasbecome absurdly rich designing weapons and, more significantly, has nomoral qualms whatsoever about the negative effects of his work. Starkis not a nice man. Except he is. This potentially realistic and complexdualistic behaviour is lost in the film’s failure to choose sides,leading us to the first of many problems; what are we, the audience,supposed to think of Tony Stark? He is presented as bright andbrilliant; a charming man of the people but also as a womaniser and awarlord. This initial confusion is nothing compared to what happenslater on. After a brush with death and a subsequent escape (which isaccomplished in an ultra-violent fashion) he holds a hippie pressconference and vows to stop making weapons for good.
