What can i say about this movie? I have seen it quite a few times sincethefirst time when i was around 6. I have seen the english version and it isdone very well. It is a great movie for all ages, but it is directed morefor children. I love the childlike humor and appreciate it.

MGM has a lot to answer for. A great deal of time, money, and marveloustalent went into “Mark of the Vampire,” only to find 15 minutes (that’s20 percent) of it left on the cutting room floor. Releasing a scant60-minute movie, the studio reportedly cut the comic relief and alsovery obviously cut material crucial to continuity and consistency. The plot is left so full of holes that I doubt I could have followedthe action if it hadn’t been for the number of familiar actors, alldoing fine work here: the Lionels Barrymore and Atwill, Gene Hersholt,Donald Meek, and especially Bela Lugosi, who is given only onedelicious line, absolutely worth the wait. Even more impressive than the cast is Todd Browning’s direction (what’sleft of it), Cedric Gibbons’ classic sets (ditto), and the gorgeouschiaroscuro photography and fluid camera-work of James Wong Howe (andditto).Whether or not you approve of it, the surprise ending is a botch job.The movie plays like a straight vampire movie— disastrously edited, butcaptivating all the same. Then comes the last 10 minutes. You feelcheated, and not just because the movie abruptly transmogrifies into avampire-free murder mystery: The action was all elaborately staged toentrap a murderer by a detective, a professor, a girl, a butler, actorsplaying vampires, and a menagerie of real bats, rodents, and what Ithink was a huge scorpion. The real problem is those inconsistencies.

MacLaine gets a huge workout in this episodic comedy about a woman fromhumble beginnings who is satisfied with the smaller things in life, butwho keeps marrying men who make a fortune and then die, leaving her awealthy widow four times over! Each one of the marriages sees MacLaineexperiencing a new level of frustration and enveloping herself in anincreasingly over-the-top super-glam wardrobe. As she relates themarriages to the rather manipulative psychologist Cummings, eachrelationship is seen as if it were a certain movie genre. Van Dykelives a simple existence as a small-time store owner and their sequencecontains an old silent-movie vignette. Newman is an expatriate artistliving in Paris, so theirs is a slightly naughty French art film.Mitchum is a businessman loaded with dough which lends itself to aparody of the fur-and-fashion Ross Hunter women’s pictures. Thenmarriage to small town hoofer Kelly includes a big song and dancenumber out of a 1940’s musical. Also on hand is loutish playboy Martin,who plays the man her mother (Dumont) wanted her to marry in the firstplace. MacLaine gives a worthy performance with lots of physical comedyand an impressive dance sequence. She’s occasionally a little shrill,but that’s the character. Van Dyke is solid, Newman is sexy (and showsmore skin here – albeit G-rated – than in the bulk of his othermovies), Mitchum is charming, Kelly is appropriately self-involved andMartin is his usual suave, laid-back self.

While not quite as engaging as TINTIN ET LE MYSTERE DE LA TOISOND’OR(1961), this adaptation is fun and silly enough to impress mostchildren under 10 and adult fans. Jean-Pierre Talbot makes for anathletic Tintin and resembles the character physically, which is whatcounts. Jean Bouise as Capitaine Haddock is rather silly and a lot morelike the comic book character than his incarnation in the previousmovie(George Wilson). The story is typical Tintin fare, with adventurein exotic places(in this case Valencia, Spain) and over the top badguys. For those of you not familiar with Tintin, let’s just say thatevery French speaking child(and most European children) under the ageof 14 has been thrilled by his comic book adventures for over half acentury. In this film we find our heroes and their friend ProfesseurTournesol going to Spain to investigate the blue oranges of the title.After much to-ing and fro-ing, they expose the villains who havecaptured the professor and his Spanish colleague. A really funny momentoccurs when Captain Haddock finds a bottle of whiskey and attempts tohave a drink while Tintin tries to get him to check out the clues hehas found. Anyone who has read a Tintin book knows that the goodcaptain likes his drink and will try anything to have one. Overall,silly but a lot of fun, especially if you are young or young at heart.I give it 6 comic books out of 10.

World War II has always been a treasure trove of some of the finestmoments of heroism known to Hollywood. For this offering, tinsel townselected a novel by John Hersey and made a movie called, “The WarLover.” The late Steve McQueen, was very proud of his role as Capt.Rickson, during the filming. Added to that was the cast and crew fromhis co-star Robert Wagner as Lt. Ed Bolland, to the supporting actors,Gary Cockrell as Lt. Marty Lynch, Michael Crawford as Sgt. JuniorSailen and multi-talented Robert Easton as Sgt. Handown enhance thisfine war time saga. The well written story about the war, it’s effectson the characters and their ability to cope with it is what makes thismovie a classic. Occasionally some pearls of wisdom are uttered whichmakes one think, such as the phase spoken by the Flight Surgeon Randall(Bernard Braden) who said, “I consider war to be a complete cession ofrational thought.” That is true, not to mention memorable. Like thetale itself which zeros in on the men, their loves and their ownmortality. All in all, a worthy Classic from the Greatest generation.

Jaguar Paw hides his pregnant wife and his son in a deep hole nearby their tribe and is captured while fighting with his people. An eclipse spares his life from the sacrifice and later he has to fight to survive and save his beloved family.

I saw this movie last night at a free sneak preview down in TowsonMaryland. The movie pleased me greatly, almost as much as Braveheart.The story was well written with some well placed humor. As historicallyinaccurate as some people say this may be, it seemed to me, the layperson, to be a fairly accurate representation of the Mayan culturebased on my semi limited knowledge of it. The movie was shotbeautifully and showed the vastness of the jungle. The battle/fightscenes were also shot very well and showed just the right amount ofrestraint. It’s rare in this day and age to see a movie with no or verylittle CGI and I thought that was very tasteful on Mel’s part to keepthis film very raw and basic. If anything, the film could actuallystand to gain a little time in the narrative. Not that I’m complainingabout the movie being a tick around two hours, but I think an extra 20or 30 minutes could’ve helped. I think fans of Braveheart, if you canget past the language barrier, will find this to be a very satisfyingfilm.8 out of 10.Cory.

This movie was a fun watch for me and my ten year old. It did have somereally weird segments, most notable being the suffragettes dancing thecan-can to drum up signatures; and, the Balinese dancer who couldn’tdance. After way too much time building the love-interest, the filmgets down to the rush of sight-gags that we expect from A and C…The special effects are pretty weak; however, the timing of the two isas good as ever. There are transformations, barking rabbits and peopleturning into mice…more than enough to capture the imagination of achild and more than enough to get an adult to watch the movie with hisown child.

Director MIchel Drach tells here his own story,when he was a childduring WW2.The film is a long flashback;Trintignant plays a director(actually Drach)who wants to transfer a screenplay -see above- to thescreen.If my memory serves me,cause it’s been a long time since Iwatched this flick for the last time,present scenes are shot in blackand white whereas past sequences are in color.Drach remembers.It was WW2,and Jews were arrested .His mother (playedby Drach’s then wife Marie-JosГ© Nat)had to escape from France and itwas not an easy thing to do ,because of her compatriots ‘ greed.There’sa wonderful part of a grand-mother ,marvelously played by GabrielleDoulcet who tries to explain to her grandson the absurdity of theanti-Semitism.Nat won the best actress prize at the festival de Cannes1974. Should appeal to people who like films like ” Au nom de tous lesmiens” (story of Martin Gray ,directed by Robert Enrico),”un sac debilles” and of course “the diary of Anne Frank”.

What About movie – Hundreds of years ago in Lapland, a little boy named Nikolas loses his family in an accident. The villagers decide to look after the orphaned boy together. Once a year – at Christmas – Nikolas moves to a new home. To show his gratitude, Nikolas decides to make toys for the children of the families as good-bye presents. Over the years, Nikolas’s former adoptive families become many, and soon almost every house has presents on its doorstep on Christmas morning. At thirteen, Nikolas is sent to live and work with Iisakki, a grumpy old carpenter, who forbids Nikolas to continue making presents for Christmas. Gradually, however, Nikolas wins Iisakki’s trust. Together they begin to look after the Christmas traditional that Nikolas has begun. When the aged Iisakki has to leave Nikolas and move away, the tradition of Christmas presents is once again at risk. Thankfully, Nikolas comes up with a solution that brings children joy every Christmas, even continuing to today.

Spoiler! A surprise ending about hope. I watched this movie with my wife and nephewAustin. Austin enjoyed the movie. Austin liked how people can change. Mywife liked the dog. Myself found it a little long at the beginning, but asthe movie progressed the pace and flow melded into a entertaining movie. The guy from Law and Order played a good part. It was different seeing himin such a different role. The movie gives you a feeling of country life. They even had the nasty neighbour. The other dogs in the movie were meanbecause they were mistreated, but with a little love and kindest, they canchange. Overall it is a good movie for the family to watch.

Alfred Ollivant wrote the book “Owd Bob, Son of Battle,” an excellent dogstory. This movie is the third or fourth retelling of it. They’ve basicallybutchered the book. This movie twisted up all of the characters and thestory of Ollivant’s book. This is not always bad, but I don’t think itaddedanything to the story in this case.The dogs are central to this story. Although they are attractive BorderCollies, many aspects of the dogs are very inaccurate. For example, one ofthe main plot lines of the story deals with a killer dog–a dog that killssheep. In sheep country, a dog who kills sheep is totally unacceptable andwould be shot immediately. I suppose in a rare case an owner may find outand try to hide it, but even this is very rare. These are working dogs, anda working dog can’t be a sheep killer. It’s an instant death warrant.Furthermore, these sheep killers get smart. If they kill a sheep and comehome with blood on their face and fleece in their teeth they KNOW they’llbeshot. They clean up. But the sheep killer in this movie keeps coming backtohis owner with a bloody face, and his owner cleans him up, and keeps quiet.This movie totally ignores this basic fact.Furthermore, when the dogs are in the sheepherding competition, one of thedogs (not a main character) herds sheep excellently. But when the maincharacter dogs begin their sheepherding, it’s pathetic. The dog is justshown jumping up and down somewhere in the vicinity of the sheep.
