I am a very big fan of most film musicals, but this one always left mecold.The plot is not very engaging or involving, and Fred Astaire is notreally a very likable character here-whereas in most, if not all of hisother films, he is always very likable.The dance numbers are really nothing special-compare some of the oneshere with say, Fred Astaire and Eleanore Powell in Broadway Melody of1940!!No comparison. Now that film had some great dancing , superb,especially the finale, “Begin the Beguine”.I know everyone simply adores Vincente Minellis’s work, and he was verytalented to be sure, but this is one of the most overrated filmmusicals ever.

Two years later, Bharti is arrested by the police for killing Ramesh in cold blood. ALICE is the kind of movie they made in the 30’s and 40’s. Never attemptsto be an “event”. Just wants to entertain. And it does. I was surprisedby Kiefer Sutherland. In a role that could be a cliche, he made it real.The plot does make allusions to ALICE IN WONDERLAND. A guy dressed in whitedoes go through a hole and Kiefer does fall down one. Like ALICE the plotdoes twist and turn, but with a freshness you don’t see in small movies. Iloved the direction, Sutherland, just a very fast paced and interestingmovie.

Even though I was born a couple of decades after this movie wasreleased, I wanted to watch it when it played on TV because it wasgiven a perfect 5/5 rating by my local newspaper’s TV listings. When Ituned in, I was even more excited when I found out that it was a DavidWolper and Mel Stuart collaboration because I really loved ‘Willy Wonkaand the Chocolate Factory.’ It’s a shame that ‘If It’s Tuesday ThisMust Be Belgium’ is not available on DVD. Even though it was made about30 years ago, the misadventures of the ensemble cast are as funny asever. The fine balance between the witty humor and acerbic banter inthis movie is something that is rare in movies today. The only moviesthat come close are a few of Wes Anderson’s (Rushmore, RoyalTenenbaums, The Life Aquatic), but instead of being faux retro, ‘IfIt’s Tuesday This Must Be Belgium’ really is retro. It shows all ofEurope’s fabled landmarks in the tongue-and-cheek manner that you can’tget from any movie unless it really was made in 1969. I liked the partwhen the group was at a cheese market in Amsterdam and the tour guidesays, “There’s an auction of gouda cheeses and edam cheeses. And prettygood-a edam cheeses they are.” That is like so corny it’s funny. Afterwatching this movie, I actually did want to take a European bus tour!But the best thing about this movie is its great cast, particularly thebeautiful Suzanne Pleshette and the devilishly handsome Ian McShane.

If Technicolor MGM finesse is enough to stun you (and it easily can beenough) then THE HARVEY GIRLS is 3D color heaven. As a musical and as amovie, I found it weirdly flat. In Australia where these films werehuge box office successes, MGM reissued many of their 40s and 50smusicals right up to the late 60s. The few that were not on the reissuelist included THE HARVEY GIRLS. … whether it was too American (!?) orwhether it just did not have the pizazz or the fantasy we in Oz seem tolove, I am not sure but I can feel my reasons why I became bored withit. On the plus side, I was constantly enchanted with gorgeous Garlandaged 22, the breathtaking Technicolor photography and any close up ofAngela Lansbury, clothed to the dazzling hilt. I can see how and whythis film went through various changes during production and it feelslike an overdressed version of another more ordinary western gussiedinto being a 1945 musical. OKLAHOMA’s 1943 stage success is quiteevident. Research shows that MGM saw a chance to emulateOKLAHOMA’ssuccessful stage result and contrived a western on theproduction conveyor belt into a pseudo OKLAHOMA – ish movie bywrangling THE HARVEY GIRLS into the form it is now. This explains whythe film seems disjointed and pieced from different imagery and ideas.I found John Hodiak creepy with his odd teeth/mustache (that scarygrin!) and no leading romantic man for Judy.

Don’t be discouraged by this Soviet film’s age or obscurity – it is oneof the finest movies ever made, and it stands alongside Carl TheodoreDreyer’s “The Passion of Joan of Arc,” as the most modernist film ofthe 1920’s. This is a spectacular visual achievement, and its visionaryconception of cinema is moderinism that we’ve still failed to catch upwith. Unlike most recognized masterpieces of Soviet silent cinema (e.g.”The Battleship Potempkin,” “Earth,” “The End of St. Petersburg,”etc.), however, “Arsenal” is a surprisingly approachable film, and itsstrangeness and abstraction are consistently fascinating. Originallyintended as a propaganda film, “Arsenal” is the second component ofdirector Alexander Dovzhenko’s “Ukraine Trilogy,” and it details anepisode in the Russian Civil War (~1918) in which the Kiev Arsenalworkers aided the Bolshevik army against the ruling Central Rada.Dovzhenko’s approach is somewhat similar to Sergei Eisentein, in thathe relied heavily on montage, but his pace was less frenetic, and hisExpressionism was more exaggerated. As detailed in the film’s academiccommentary, Dovzhenko was previously a political cartoonist, and youcan see traces of this background in “Arsenal.” The characters in thisfilm are caricatures, sometimes grotesque and sometimes funny.Similarly, there is a strangeness and remoteness in “Arsenal,” whichmakes the film’s few intentionally lucid passages quite dreamlike.

I had really high expectations and they weren’t fulfilled. But I wasn’tdisappointed either.Yes, it could be better. This interesting theme could be great materialfor psychological drama. I generally dislike action and zombie movies,but this one was nice mix 33% action + 33% black comedy +33% romance.Everything was moderate but not in a bad sense of that word. Acting wasgood and it was nice to see Mr Bettany in superhero role (if you cansay so for an angel role:) Characters were well written (could bebetter and deeper, but it’s enough). Not much suspense, but interestingenough.

“Pearl” covers the life of a young aviatrix with a Chickasaw mother anda blind, white father during ages 12-18 in the 1920s and 30s. The sameactress plays Pearl throughout all these years, which doesn’t quitework. This film focuses on the love of young Pearl for her family,especially her father, and her love of flying, and the conflicts thatensue.This movie was sponsored by the Chickasaw Nation, and has that BBC filmquality rather than a Hollywood feel. Many BBC films, however, areexcellent, while this one was just . . . not. Apparently it was filmedin just a few weeks, and it really shows. The acting, while notterrible, was a bit forced rather than natural. The flying “specialeffects” are rather transparent as well.While it had many flaws, it wasn’t boring and did wring a few tearsfrom me anyway. It is an interesting story, and something the wholefamily can enjoy. I would recommend watching if you have an interest inaviation or Native American film.

I just saw this movie tonite on a “Classic Movies” presentation on TV,and was just delighted.Set in 1940s Kenya, This is a good African adventure flick, with a talethat is tied in very well with the contemporary World War II backdropto this 1941 production. In fact, there’s a really wonderful scene,that I won’t describe in detail (don’t want to give anything away) inwhich an Italian from Abyssinia expresses passionately the globalsignificance of what is transpiring in this isolated Kenyan outpost.From there we have a tale of intrigue, adventure playing itself outacross exotic landscapes, dark caverns, and lovely lake-fronts. All inall, this movie has a strong Rider Haggard flavor. If you know and likeRider Haggard’s stories, you’ll probably like this movie.Gene Tierney’s top billing in this movie is a bit of an overstatement:Bruce Cabot is actually the star of the movie; with George Sanders in astrong supporting role. All are very good, though, with theCabot-Sanders character conflict and collaboration carried off verywell indeed. And Tierney is simply lovely, a delight to behold; andreally a very fine actress indeed.All in all, a good movie … I’m grateful to have stumbled across itwhile channel surfing tonite … !

This is definitely a better than average espionage yarn produced byWarner Bros. a couple of years before our entry into WWII. FRANCISLEDERER has a key role as a homegrown Nazi spy without much experiencebut learning the ropes from the more experienced GEORGE SANDERS andPAUL LUKAS.Anatole Litvak’s direction is swift and the story told in asemi-documentary style that would flourish more often in the ’40s overat Fox where films like THE HOUSE ON 92nd STREET and 13 RUE MADELINEwould exploit the subject of espionage.EDWARD G. ROBINSON has the role of a good guy for a change, an FBI manwho has to track down the Nazi spies before valuable information isleaked.Maintains interest throughout, despite the late appearance in the filmof Robinson’s character.One of FRANCIS LEDERER’s best roles during the ’30s, it’s a film wellworth watching despite the overtones of propaganda.
I’m afraid that, despite this story’s supposedly being based on fact, itdidn’t strike me as so impressive. Perhaps partly because we were to see itso many, many more times during the war years. It’s rather reminiscent of”The House on 92nd Street” and to a lesser extent the beginning of “ThirteenRue Madeleine.” A dissatisfied unemployed German-American who mistreats hiswife gets caught up in the German-American Bund by a shouting sieg-heilingNazi toastmaster with a sinister mustache and pronounced eyeglasses — whomistreats his wife. Joe Sawyer is a dumb enlisted man who feeds data to thespy.
