This film is one of the least known gems to come from producer Dino deLaurentiis. Five women in war-torn Yugoslavia have their heads shavedfor having intimate relations with a German soldier. The five bond andeventually join the partisan group who punished them back in theirvillage. The film documents their fight against the enemy of theirhomeland, and their internal feelings of remorse, love, and hate. Thewomen all give stellar performances–Silvana Mangano, Barbara BelGeddes, Vera Miles, Jeanne Moreau, and young Carla Gravina. Van Heflinand Harry Guardino also deliver fine performances, as the leader of theYugoslav partisan group and the troublemaker of the partisans,respectively. But perhaps the most touching performance comes fromRichard Basehart as the German Captain Erich Reinhardt. In the littlescreen time he has, Mr. Basehart delivers a gem, bringing poignantly tolife a gentle widower, plucked from his comfortable life as auniversity professor to fight in the war. He is captured by thepartisans, and bonds with the 5 Branded Women who have been acceptedinto their group. He had shown sympathy for the women in the beginningof the film after their disgrace was made public, and in captivity, hebonds with them, particularly Mira (Carla Gravina),(whose baby hedelivers) and Ljuba (Jeanne Moreau),(who finds herself in danger offalling for him).

What About movie – THe first half of the film portrays the struggle of the under-armed, under-manned colonists against the British Redcoats at Lexington, Bunker Hill and Valley Forge. Other landmarks of the American Revolution shown include the Boston Tea Party, Paul Revere’s midnight ride and Patrick Henry’s (played by Frank McGlyyn Jr. and not played by his father Frank McGlynn Sr) inflammatory speeches to the VIrginia House of Burgesses. The second half dwells on the bloody Indian War of Mohawk Valley. THe parts are tied together by the troubled romance between a young patriot, Nathan Holden (Neal Hamilton (I)’)and Nancy Montague (Carol Dempster), the daughter of a Tory Judge.

today i saw this movie. and i could not understand for what purposethis movie was made. Raoul Walsh’s films of the 1950’s are uncharted territory, much likethe South Pacific island where most of the action in Naked and the Deadunfolds. Many of the films aren’t available or are rarely seen. Ofthose that are, I’m only familiar with a series of Clark Gable filmsserving mostly as an excuse for Walsh, through Gable, to flaunt hisreactionary values, missing body parts, and old-sea-salt virility. Innone of these films was there any indication that Walsh could deliversomething of the scale and complexity of Naked and the Dead, which morethan equals mid-period lulus like The Roaring Twenties. Walsh was an arbitrary choice to film Norman Mailer’s novel. Mailerwrote the book as a young man with a name to make and awards to win. In1958 Walsh had nothing left to prove to anyone — even when he wasMailer’s age, I can’t imagine him going for Mailer’s bludgeoningtactics. Though I’m no Mailer acolyte, you do miss his chutzpah atfirst, as the movie has a laid-back feel more appropriate for a beachvolleyball film. An amphibious landing that brings echoes of D-Day iscarried out near the beginning of the film, during which we’re toldthat 130 men have died, but we don’t see a single limb get blown off.We just get a couple shots of smoke rising out of the forest as theships land. You start to worry that Walsh, like in those Errol Flynnwar films of the 1940’s, has brought his crew down to Pasadena to filmin a state park with three potted palm trees.

Aside from the novelty of seeing Jon Hall and Harold Huber in a western(as neither were the type to usually do westerns), there isn’t a wholelot distinctive about this western. It’s one of a billion (give or take5) that are completely fictional stories about real life westerners. Inthis case, it’s Kit Carson–an interesting guy but also someone whereabout 98% of what you read and see in movies about his is completefiction. In this case, it’s pretty much more of the same.Kit (Jon Hall) and his friends (Harold Huber and Ward Bond) have justfinished an adventure which includes the hilarious pastime of killingIndians and scalping them. So, when the cavalry officer (Dana Andrews)asks them to guide a wagon train west to California, Kit is notinterested. However, when Kit gets a gander at a feisty lady, hecompletely changes his mind and leads the settlers. The problem is thatan evil Spanish megalomaniac is planning on turning California into isown little fiefdom and plans on wiping out the settlers. Can Kit andthe cavalry stop this nut-job and make America safe for more whitefolks wanting Indian scalps? Bad history but somewhat entertaining. Nota great film but a decent one if you adore the genre. Not much more Iwant to say about this rather forgettable film.

The beginning of the story started out with a very good interestingsetup. The boys, the father, and a father’s yearning for acceptancefrom his son. However, as the movie continued, it lacked imaginationand was predictable. By the end, I met the ‘cheesy’ side of the movieand was uncomfortable to even bare. This movie started out well butlacked the complexity of keeping imagination alive. Plot weakenedthroughout and all that was left was fighting and a rated B movie. Acting was fine as these actors are experienced and believable.However, even great actors have their limits and felt that the wholestory became unbelievable. Save your money, wait until it hits Redbox.

I sat down one evening in anticipation of a good horror movie, and whatdo I get the worst film ever made no wonder why it was so cheap to makeit was crap. With no storyline I sat afterwards trying to make head &tail of the story. It just doesn’t make any sense if the girl and thebaby were killed when the father hit them when he feel asleep and allthe family died how come the whole film was based around them beingkilled? The daughter survived cause she got thrown out the window sowhat happened did she magically go through a chair and then through awindow hello get real. If the film was based on her nightmare then howcome she survived cause she couldn’t have passed the chair.This film does not make any sense cause in reality it can not happen inthe way the writers wrote it and in any case if all the family died atthe point of impact how come the father’s note was found at the end?Plus if they all died at impact the main story of them being hunted bythe girl and the guy in the car did not happen so how can he appear atthe end of the film if he never really existed? So in summary it doesnot make sense in any aspect no matter which way you try to think aboutit.

What About movie – Three convicts enroute to Tahiti are put to work at a children’s leper hospital when their plane makes an unexpected stop on another island. There, Father Perreau is to get off and replace Father Doonan, who’s been relieved of his duties by the cardinal. Once on the island, things get out of control when the volcano decides to erupt, and the Governor orders an evacuation. The convicts, priests and leper children are all on top of the island and have no sure way to get down and off to safety. All must work together if any are to survive.

This film is a somewhat entertaining way to spend 2 hours, but it isn’t verygood, especially considering the talent involved in it (particularly the twomajor Oscar-winning movie stars in the leads.)In some ways, it feels like two movies spliced together: the first halfabout the disheartened priest trying to minister to people who have grown toresent him for building a leper hospital on their island and the secondhalf, a cheesy disaster film about that same priest attempting to rescue thepatients before the hospital is engulfed by a volcano.Overall, the story is generally contrived and silly (especially once thevolcano rescue begins.) The special effects are uneven with the volcanobeing somewhat unconvincing with various scenes alternating from noisy andsmoky to clear and quiet even though only a few minutes have passed and thecharacters haven’t walked but a few yards away. In fact, the volcanoeffects are akin to those you might see on “Gilligan’sIsland”.In addition, the long line of people on a trek to escape danger was donemuch more effectively in movies like the “Poseidon Adventure”.Generally, the film IS fun to watch; it just isn’t particularlygood.

This is an adaptation of Howard Pyle’s “Men of Iron”, and an unusuallyenjoyable film from start to finish. Ignore Tony Curtis’s accent; ithardly matters to anyone that young and everyone in the film is bright,lively and suitable to his/her part. The direction by Rudolph Mategives a light, sunny feel to the entire piece, and he keeps the actionmoving splendidly in my judgment. The storyline is classic. Myles andhis sister Meg have been raised as peasants. One day they journey toMackworth Castle and enter a new world, the world of noble landowners,quarrelsome young prigs and knights. Myles continues to search for thesecret of his origins and finds it in the Library finally, the BlackShield of Falworth, shield of an attainted traitor–his father; ofcourse he was innocent; and when Myles turns out to be a promisingyoung knight of courage and natural skills, he is willing to beknighted in order to fight it out–at Prince Hal (the future Henry V’s)plan–with the villain of the piece to claim his rightful heritage andwear the family symbol again. What About movie – World War II drama where the action centers around a single maneuver by a squad of GIs in retaliation against the force of the German Siegfried line. Reese joins a group of weary GIs unexpectedly ordered back into the line when on their way to a rest area. While most of the men withdraw from their positions facing a German pillbox at the far side of a mine-field, half a dozen men are left to protect a wide front. By various ruses, they manage to convince the Germans that a large force is still holding the position. Then Reese leads two of the men in an unauthorized and unsuccessful attack on the pillbox, in which the other two are killed, and when the main platoon returns, he is threatened with court-martial. Rather that face the disgrace, and in an attempt to show he was right, he makes a one-man attack on the pillbox.

This World War II film is one of the finest I have seen. It features anallstar cast, great direction, a great script and compellingperformances.Steve McQueen plays an American soldiers who thrives on combat. He getsbusted from squad leader to Private when he crashes a jeep. His squad getssent to the front lines, where he clashes with by-the-book Sergeant Larkin(Harry Guardino). Problems are made worse when the Company pulls out,leaving Larkin’s squad to cover a huge section of the front lines. Inorderto succeed, they trick the Germans in various ways to make them thinkthey’re a much larger unit.The film features a powerful central performance by Steve McQueen. Whilehislines are short and to the point, his facial expressions and movements arejust as important. He makes a very convincing front-line soldier, doing alot of things many other front-line-combat themed war movies of the time(TOHELL AND BACK, etc) leave out.Supporting McQueen are Bobby Darin, James Coburn, and Mike Kellin all veryyoung. Their characters were unique at the time but may seem a bitchlichedand two-dimensional if you’ve seen a lot of war pictures.Also lending a hand if Bob Newhart as a bumbling typist who ends upgettingcommandeered to help hold the front line position. His telephone monloguescene is a classic and he makes a very believable scared-stiff REMF, justlike Jeremy Davies as Cpl. Upham in SAVING PRIVATE RYAN.The battle scenes were obviously filmed on a tight budget but are veryauthentic appearing.

In opening up the play Mr. Kelley has lost some of the intimacy whichin turn does not allow the fullest expression of grief. Mr. Gallagherand Ms. Danes seem to know this and so are a bit labored in theirotherwise good and consistent performances. Michelle Pfiefer (Mrs.Kelley) seems to be mis-cast and appears also not to be giving her allto her performance of the late Gillian. It would be interesting to knowhow she might of played it with different direction or what anotheractress may have been able to do with the role. Still it is anexcellent portrait of the ways loss and grief influence our lives andbecome part of who we are. Supporting cast is fine.
